Knock his wife and their two children were sleeping one of two calamities befell them Either some person or persons unknown prompted by a fiendish desire to obtain money entered the house and murdered the entire family after which to conceal forever the evidencesof their crime they set fire to the house or else the building took fire accidentally and the occur pants becoming overpowered by smoke and heat became unconscious and so perished statement About half past 1 yesterday morning as Kena a marble dealer opposite the ceme tery James Whipple and Geo Loreine were re turning home from a lodge meeting they discov ered rank Knock's houe on fire Mr Kena drove his horse at full speed up ort street wak ing the neighbors as he went hurrying to the scene He supposed that the fire had already been discovered by some one but was surprised to find no one present The wind was blowing quite strong and the flames had already gained considerable headway and Mr Kena pulled off Ids coat rushed to he barn and let two horses and a cow loose He then pulled a wagon away from the side of the house and went and got a pail but on account of the well being in the kitchen had great difficulty in securing water He did all he could however and finally said to James "Whipple and Geo Loreine that he smelled burning flesh They replied that the odor came from the Carbon Works ''But'' says Mr Kena knew better for as I went around to where one of the windows of the bouse had been I distinctly saw two bodies clasped in each other's arms As soon as the flames died down sufficiently I went into the ruins and brought them out 1 in again and brought out another body which proved to be that of the eldest Meantime Wbinple and Loreine worked as I best they could in a vain effort to extinguish the flames but the work wa useless tor in about twenty minutes after the arrival of the over taxed trio the roof of the building fell in and all possibility of saving either life or property was practically ended or some unaccountable reason additional help was very slow ia arriving for notwithstanding almost continuous shouts from KenaWhipple and Loreine it was fully an hour after the discovery of the fire before any help arrived BV 3 O'CIOCK A crowd of perhals twenty five men with quite a number of women had reached the scene and dazed by a sense of the pitiable spectacle before them they worked1 with frantic uselessness to save they knew not what but all inspired by the same hope that through some mysterious providence there might yet be found a living member of rank Knock's family To illustrate the wild efforts of those who labored it need but be stated that they tried to form a bucket line tor passing water from Baby Creek a distance of nearly if not quite a quarter of a mile Presently the light of breaking dav mingling with the sluggish embers as they made fitful efforts to regain their 10't vigor revealed through the canepv of smoke which hovered over the ruins a shocking siectacle of ruin made double shocking to those friends and neighbor who knew that at least lour persons had lost their lives there THE SEARCH OR THE EABY The bodies of the father mother and elffest Ixiy luwi been pulled from the rums before the floor gave wav but the body of the baby Al bert had not been found ith poles the neigh bors knocked away burning bits of wood snow and water were thrown upon the burning boards and so the fire wa ar last almost totally extin guished By the caving in of the floor the cellar was revealed and there iart tally covered by turnips and potatoes which had been thorough ly roinued was found the charred remains of the little one scarcely recognizable as portions of a human body As carefully as poaaible the re main0 were lifted out and beside those of the other members of the family Iat' the tour bodies were taken to the home of Mrs Knock mother of the deceased husband and fathtr The scsne jrvr ntei when Mrs Knock nrst saw the remains was tuck a one as the average person does not care tn look upon a second time and it was made more pitiable when a few minutes later Mre Mat Vfitman who lives on the l)ix road and who Ls the mother of Mrs rank afternoon on a charge of collecting money from citizens by falsely pretending that he was de sirous of providing himself with an artificial limb He succeeded in raising a considerable amount and it was alleged that he had been playing the same game in other places When the accused was brought before Justice Miner he pleaded guilty but he denied the charge at his arraignment in the higher court A question was raised as to whether he could be guilty un der the circumstances alleged and by stipulation it was agreed that the case should go to the Su preme Court Recorder Swift agreed to allow tlie attorney for the defense the expenses in curred in tarrying the case up Webber how ever elected to be tried and his attorney was greatly surprised to hear a verdict of not guilty being rendered by the remarked that he saw two men driving at full peed away from the fire immedi ately after the flames began to show themselves The report is either a very silly one or the manwho made suck a claim is a criminal in that he did not at once run over to the Knocks house and warn them if alive of their danger or if dead rescue the bodies in the hope of obtaining evidence of the murder THE UNERAL The remains of the four members of the Knock family will be buried in one coffin at Woodmere Cemetery this afternoon An idea of the condi tion cf the remains may be gained from a re mark by an undertaker who said it will not require an extra large collin THE INQVEST At 6 o'clock last evening Justice Roulo began the inquest at his office opposite Woodmere There was a very large crowd of people in at tendance a great many perrons being unable to gain entrance to the Justice's office After im paneling a jury Justice Roulo addressed them upon the importance of the case "Beyond he said are manv very suggestive points in this most melancholy mystery Here is a man honet industrious peaceful and well liked who has saved a quanti ty of money to pay taxes With his lamily he lives in a one story house of small dimensions and from which a person ought to in health make his exit in at least two seconds All of these persons save the baby were in health and able to make quick strong efforts Their house burns down and thev fail to make their escape You gentlemen are to examine ihiscase astirefully tied as thoroughly a possible If as rome suppose au awful quadruple murder has been committed it is of vital importance iliac the tact be developed It is of equal im portance that it shall be learned if possible whether the tragedy was purely the result of accident and But two witnesses Rosa "Whitman and An drew Whitman were examined their testimony revealing nothing new wtien the inquest was adjourned to 10 o'clock next Monday morning Interviews with a brother and several intimate acquaintances of the deceased man brought the same answer from all of them None of them had ever known the deceased to carry or even own a revolver A MOST INHTMAN BETCHERY Has been committed In looking at the case trout such a standpoint first obstacle is the fact that ail of the bodies are so badly burned that it would lie impossible to locate any gun uiroa0 or siaomng as Tnnt Mr fractured is looked upon ot inuraer out on is atg ied that the Dr A Hoxsir's Certain Coegh A positive and unfailing cure for croup Used with the greatest success by this distinguished phvsl cian forlii'tign years in Buffalo Commission had settled the little difficultywith Dr Thuner by relieving him of all county cases and appointing Dr rank Rowley to look after county patients residing in the city Auditors Michie and theahan held a consulta tion and proceeded to on the plan adopted by the heavy weight Aiderman from the ifth When asked what course the Audi tors intended to purroe Michie stated that he had nothing to say as his time on the board was very short I'll tell yon what we'll said the re doubtable Jerry" Poor Commission can appoint half a dozen County Physicians if they want to but not one of them will get a cent of rolarv as I am the appointment of Ur Rowlev wu made un der legal advice and relieves Drs Lhuner and Owen of llit trouble of attending the coiroty px'r the itv Comm kroner Moore law provides that the County Auditors shall an poinr a physician to attend the Countv Jan and another tn hold post mortems and heretofore these two have performed the dute of physicians Before the Auditors made their ap pointments a committee from the Poor Commis sion waited on them and requested the privilege of naming one ot the successors ot Drs Thuner and Owen The Auditors went right ahead and made the appointments ignoring the request of the Conimioion ana a a 1 esuil Dr Thuner refused to attend a call in the annexed district because it as outride the old corporate limits There is no reason why the Poor Commission should not look alter the sick poor as well as those who ari enjoy mg good health and Dr Rowlev was appointed at a salary of $900 a ear Heistne county physician and the others are jail physicians if the Auditors refuse to pay out ui the poor fund it will be shot wound or cutting of liirc the cause of death The Knocn bv some as prool Ilin other liana it skull may have been broken bv the timbers of the falling roof and walls A discovery of possi bly great significance was the finding in Lie ruins of a No 22 long caliber revolver at full cock with all cartridges empty Whether they were discharged before the fire or by the heat of the fire is the question which arises Coupled with the revolver discovery is the fact that Mr Knock bad been saving up money tor some time with which to pay kis taxes and to make a payment on his property Hence it is bought he had from $200 to $800 the house inally in this same connection it is known that ia week Mr Knock discharged a hired man who uecame in consequence of the discharge veryabusive claiming that MrKnoek should keep him through the winter THE rovse That the interior arrangement of the house and the the eldest son was found drowned in April 1883 As a family they have always been noted as sober and industrious and were members in gcnjd standing of a German Lutheran church THE STORY TOLD AU day
