was rather light compared with the crowd present on Saturday At 11:20 Bamford the not out of Saturday took his place at the wicket with Dot ds as partner Bruen bowled the firstover which was productive of oue run Off Horner's first another run was scored but Dodds put the last ball of the next over into hands and retired with two singles to his credit Three wickets for fifteen Pannell joined Bamford and put a little life into the game putting together eight ru including a drive for three to the ropes while Bamtord added two singles With the score at twenty five Bunnell skied one of fast ones which was accepted by Turner and Bartlett was sent out to keep Bam ford company Bamford added a single and two doubles to his score and Bartlett managed to save his egg but was Immediately after bowled by Bruen and thirty for six wickets appeared on the telegraph The redoubtable Tom Dale now loomed up at the wicket took his gunrd carefully and" then walked back to the pavilion after receiv ing his first bail from seveutor thirty three The veteran Armstrong was tbe next victim Bamford who was playing careful cricket put to gether two more singles while Armstrong con tributed LU first and lost ruu for in the next over one of teasi rs caught him off his guard and he gave place to Hinehman eight for thirty three In the next over Bamford was clean bowled by Hor ner with fourteen to his credit including one three and two doubles Bamford next faced Hinch man who opened the ball by driving Bruen to the ropes for three and in the same overlifting one over the ropes for four Bamford contributing a single next over added another single to Bam score but the first ball of next over took Lis wicket nine wickets for forty six Ross was next batsman and no sooner did he take bis place at the wicket than Hinchman again lifted one of over the ropes for four amid great ap plause Ross then followed suit by driving tbe next bail fo three but before another run was ad to tbe score Hinchman was clean bowled by Hornar ten wiekets for forty six Ridgley was next on the list and six overs were played before another vacancy occurred Ross contributing two singles and another three while Ridgeley ran up five by careful play ith eight to his credit Ross put a ball from Horner into A hands and when Rathbone came out the telegraph showed eleven for fifty six Ridgley added a double and Bruen then disposed of Rath bone without his troubling the scorers and with the score at 5s Roberts joined Ridgley Both bats men added singles when at 64 Roberts who had one or two narrow escapes from being tumped by Newton was bowled by Bruen with three singles for bis share letting in the last man Miller who had the good luck to snick Horner in the slips for three and for a single before getting his wicket taken leaving Ridgley not out with a total of eight made by good careful batting The inning closed with a total of 68 runs off the bat and one extra a bye making the total score ot the innings 69 The Peninsulars not having scored within eighty or their opponents score after a short interval again took up the defense Ridgley the nct out of the first inning and Calvert were the first at thewickets but neither made any stay A Thorn ton who had gone on to bowl at the north end quickly found stumps and the first wicket fell for one run Pannell now came out and aa in the first inning made things lively for a time He soon put together nine consisting of three doubles and a drive for three to the ropes while Ridgley added a single when with the score at eleven Whitby clean bowled Ridgley and Dale faced Pannell After driving Thornton for two the latter took his revenge by bowling him with the next ball and with 16 on the board Davies came out The next ball from Whitby disposed of Pan sell and Bamford took his place rom this on no stand was made till Armstrong came in Davies Bamford Ross and Bartlett losing their wickets in quick succession lioss alone adding materially to the score to the extent of 7 runs including a drive for four Armstrong by good cricket ran up a score of 15 before he was bowled by Turner eleven wickets for 43 Roberts Dodds Damford 1 1 at bone and Stiller could do very little with the bowling ot Turner and Sanders who went on in place of Thornton and Whitby after lunch Only one ruu was added before the inning closed for 49 seven of which were extras It was now only 8:30 and althought the match ended here In favor of the visitors by an in nings and 165 runs to spare as there was by this time a large attendance on the ground tbe Englishmen kindly agreed to go to the wickets again and give an exhibition inning and without delay Messrs Horner and Roller appeared at the wickets The Peninsulars being reinforced by Lane the profes sional bowler of the Philadelphia club in place of one of their number and made a much better show ing in this tunings With such bowlers as Dale and Lane supplemented by excellent fielding all round tbe visitors had their hands full and 131 ruus as all they could put together this time Lane did some remarkably fine bowling securing seven wickets forixty lwo runs while Davies end Rathbone Were particularly active in the field Notwithstanding the defeat of tbe home club which was only what might reasonably be expected they have reason to be proud of the record in this match for the follow ing reasons: They did not import any of their players and it is conceded on all hands that better fielding was never seen in Detroit by any team of the Peninsular club The English gentlemen left the Haltimer agaiust the children of Jacob Welz tbe Woodward avenue hardware merchant made his apriearance in the city and had a consul tation with Auditor Moran and Sir Welz regarding tbe part be took in the affair The condition of things in tbe vicinity of the River Rouge is fully set forth by the following affidavit State or Michigan I county of Wayne as' John Elba being duly sworn deposes and says he is a resident of the Township or Ecorse in said eounty and is 51 years old That iu tbe mouth ot July about the GUi of said month Henry Haltimer met affiant in a suloon nesr Woodmere Cemetery That Justice Haltimer appeared at the office of The ree Press and pro 1 need two affidavits made be fore Justice Hyacinth Riopelle last Saturday One is made by Johu Ellis and sets forth that lie was tbe complaining witness in the case against the Welz children and the second is that of Samuel Lourain setting forth that he Lourain was drunk and did not know what ho was about when early in tbe present year he made a complaint against Haltimer for disorderly conduct Neither affidavit offers any excuse for the out rage on the Welz children Mr standing in this community and the high esteem iu which he and his children are held by all who know them cannot of course be affected by any such shame ful proceedings As to the man Ellis who says he was drunk when he complained against the Welz children he is a simple minded poor German farmer who lives about a mile west of office on the Dear born road and he is well known as an intemperate man who drinks to excess whenever the opportun ity offers
