the articles stolen con sisting chiefly of gold jewelry and diamonds The police of this pity were notified of the fact and Acting Detective Ben High was de tailed to work up the case it being supposed that the stolen property would be disposed of here The officer made a careful search for the latter and discovered that a man who gave his name as rank Carter had been in the city for some time past attempting to sell jew I elry which corresponded with that stolen in Toledo and that he had succeeded in disposing of a quantity of it High obtained a descrip tion of Carter and tracking him' from one place to another finally discovered that he had been in the habit bt lodging at different hotels The officer soon identified his hand writing and finally ascertained that Car ter had engaged lodgings at the Howard House on Wednesday night The officer vis ited that hotel at a late hour in the night and after satisfying himself that the alleged bur glar was in his bed he waited until morning dawned
