have heard that said man from Statesville made several ap pointments while at the primary Everything is quiet ami no mar riage to report lours trulv What is known as the night pas senger trains the AVestern North Carolina Railroad were in collision at 43b Monday morning about a mile and a half east of Bridgewa ter Burke county Tho operator at Hickory had telegraphic orders for the west bound train that it was to pass the east bound at Glen Alpine He repeated the order back to the train dispatcher and had it confirmed but in issuing it to the engineer of the west bound train he in some unac countable manner wrote Bridgewater instead of Glen Alpine Thus the train running east has just gotten uu der full headway after lea virigBridge water when the engineer saw the headlight of tho train running west Both engineers reversed the machin ery and applied their air brakes ami they and their firemen jumped The speed of the trains was materially checked but they came together with sufficient force to very nearly demol ish both engines Several persons of each train's crew were bruised aud the passengers on both were severely shaken up but nobody was seriously injured The collision oceured on a level piece of track and in a cut Ten work was necessary to clear the track Stole Whiskey and Sold It Will Tomlin a colored youth about IS years old was arrested Saturday night IMMENSE CONCESSIONS ON ALL GOODS The proof of this statement is to test what I say board of directors of the company since the purpose of the town govern ment in the matter has been made public and the proposition was re ceived in various ways It was final ly agreed that the advantage to ac erue to the company from its being able to say that a large part of its property is inside the town would more than counterbalance the loss it would sustain in being made subject to town tax and upon tin general sentiment toward was' one of friendliness company is entirely willii its proportion of the Nothing great has been done in leaf tobacco here or anywhere else for several weeks past owing to the fact that the weather has not been suitable for handling it but both of our waiehouses have been wide open all the while and sales have been as frequent ns the character of the weather would admit of Indeed but one sales day has passed this month without there having been a sale large or small aud now that the leaf is coming in order it is seeking this market in gratifying quantities The break at the Planters' Ware house yesterday was a splendid one The tobacco was from Caldwell Ca tawba and other counties Ware housemen and auctioneer were wide awake buyers were as lively as crickets and the sale was a mostspir ited one One farmer present jump led right up in the air when a great big pile of tobacco for which he had wanted lOe was knocked off at 15c When the sale closed a Caldwell planter who had brought in perhaps one fourth of the tobacco that was on the floor exclaimed for Statesville He has been selling in Danville heretofore he says he will sell here hereafter In short every body was delighted with the day's work So experienced a tobacco raiser and so observant and const rv ditive a man as Al Dulin Esq said it was the best average sale of tobacco he ever saw i The Statesville tobacco market is coming along Statesville needs for it to succeed because it would thus be of vast benefit to the town in a business way the farmers of this 1 county and section need for it to suc ceed because it is convenient to them and they want a market near i home It will
