REPUBLIC REPUBLIC CITY MAIL 14. Nine Safe After Blimp Forced Down ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (UP) A fisherman picked up all nine crewmen yesterday from a navy blimp that was forced down at sea in a thunderstorm near the bleak North Carolina banks. The men scurried into two life rafts as the bulky airship settled into the water about midnight and they rode out the storm while an air search of 50 coast guard and navy planes was mounted. The planes also were searching for a navy airman, a Lt.

Cmdr. Atkins, who bailed out in nearby waters south of Cape Hatteras. But, as in the case of the blimp crew, a surface vessel effected the rescue. The tanker Western Sun picked up Atkins, directed to him by the flicker of a survival lamp as he floated in his Mae West. A companion blimp which took a slightly different course on the flight landed safely about 9 a.m.

at Lakehurst, N.J. It also carried nine reservists. The pilot of the ditched blimp. Lt. Cmdr.

The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Saturday, August 17, 1957 Plane Down In Sea; 10 Safe, 1 Lost CIUDAD TRUJILLO, Dominican Republic (UP)-A Brazilian Super-constellation airliner trying to reach Miami for repairs, ditched in the sea off the north coast of the Dominican Republic yesterday. There were no passengers aboard.

Ten of the crewmen were reported safe. Nine paddled ashore in life rafts while the other swam the distance. The eleventh, who tried to swim, was reported missing and presumed dead. THE VARIG Brazilian Airlines plane belly-landed on the water about two miles off Puerto Plata, chief harbor on the Dominican north coast. One of its four engines was out and two were "feathered." The plane had developed mechanical trouble on a regular flight from Rio de Janeiro to New York.

All 32 passengers aboard had been discharged at Ciudad Trujillo, regular stop on the run, as a safety measure before the crew took off for Miami for repairs. A Varig spokesman in New York said the 32 passengers were transferred to a chartered Pan American airliner to complete. the trip to New York. He said he assumed about half the passengers were Americans and the rest Latin-Americans, judging from past passenger lists. No passenger list was available immediately.

A SPOKESMAN said reports from the Dominican Republic said 10 crewmen were safe. The eleventh, the plane's steward, was still missing several hours after the ditching and was 9 dead, he said. He said the pilot radioed at 12:15 p.m. EDT that he was going to ditch the plane. It actually went down about 1:30 p.m., he said.

Varig said the ditched plane had been scheduled to leave New York at noon today for the regular return passenger flight to Brazil. That flight has been canceled, the company said.
