Navy Band ktar 11:5.1 News Jior A.M. W4 By RALPH MAHONEY Radio Station KOOL may become! an outstanding example of bigtime radio when Gene Autry, cowboy movie star and master showman, takes over its ownership within the next few weeks. At the same time It may pose a challenge to such old-timers as KTAR and KOY for leadership in the valley, once the new management gets hold of the reins. Autry, now conducting a rodeo in Boston, is expected to stop off in Phoenix November 12 for a two or three day visit with his good friend, Charles II. Garland, present manager of KPHO.

to discuss the "new KOOL." Incidentally, Garland indicated last week that he may become manager of KOOL, pulling eut of KPHO as did Autry. For the record, Autry and Garland hold a controlling interest in KOPO, Tucson. The screen star, in addition to his interests in the Arizona station, controls KOWL, Santa Monica, and is ogling other stations in Denver and Reno. Present management of the Mutual-Don Lee network is marking time until the Federal Communications Commission hearing December. 15 In Washington, when Autry'i application to buy the station will be acted upon.

For those who are unable to attend the second annual Junior 20-30 Club rodeo ending today at Sportsman's Park, KOOL will aid the goings-on at 12:45 p. 3 p. m. and 5 p. m.

Phoenix high school and college educators will comprise a forum to be conducted by KOOL during National Education Week, beginning November 13. Vital topics of the day will be discussed. At the risk of incurring the wrath of stations and announcers alike, this column if going to list the names of those persons who in the opinion of a considerable number of Phoenicians are doing a commendable job of reading the Hews: Bill Lester, KOY, 7:15 and 8 ft.
