slsSBJBJI EPUBLIC UUDOG Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona. 27 Friday, July 29, 1949 Hollywood Today Radio In Review Curtain Goes lime NBC Giveaway Gives: Ally son, Husband CIVIC DRAMA FESTIVAL presents "GOODBYE AGAIN" A Gay, Spicy Comedy New Film Directions To Costar ln 4 By LOUELLA HOLLYWOOD, July 28 (INS) June Allyson had just settled down to enjoy being Mrs, Dick Powell and stay at home with her baby, when her studio held out an al luring bait the chance to costarJ with her husband in The Reformer O. for in and the Redhead. Yes, I know this was originally touted for Lana Turner, but now it will star Mr. and Mrs.

Powell on Dick's first visit to MGM. MAYBE HOWARD Hughes used to be a night owl and stay up late and start his daytime activities in mid-afternoon, but that isn't now. Howard is up early on the telephone giving orders to his studio and working hard. He reads scripts, looks at rushes, and personally takes charge at RKO these days. He has just bought Eyewitness to a Murder, by A.

After seeing Lost Boundaries, my admiration ily, 1 7 ArvitaChesbro is the maid and Howard Smith one of the leads in Good-Bye Again, Civic Drama Festival presentation scheduled Friday and Saturday nights at the Sombrero Playhouse, 4747 North Seventh street. Curtain time is 8:30 p.m. mt starring -IVsSSfl CROSBY guess.

So far as I know, this is unprecedented. Murphy promptly ordered that he be called back and ultimately got him on the phone. Man said he had no idea what the mystery picture was. No, he didn't want to guess either. And he hung up again, but not before Ava Gardner succeeded in donating gas range to his church.

I have no idea what the church will do with it. AS A MASTER of ceremonies, George Murphy acts as if he's running the annual banquet of a gas appliance dealers' association. He is strictly business at all times, which may not be such a bad idea at that. Hollywood Calling, after all, is closer to a business than entertainment. And it may succeed in putting Benny out of business.

It may even succeed in putting radio out of business. One misapprehension ought to be cleared up right now. Hollywood Calling arrived on the heels of one of the greatest fanfares of publicity in recent history, and somehow got the idea June Allyson was included in the first jackpot. But no. You only get to talk to her on the phone.

You don't win permanent possession even if you know what the mystery ovie is. Amusement Timetable AERO My Dream Is Yours, 8:05. El Paso, 6:00. 10:10. CINEMA PARK When My Baby Smiles at Me, 8:00, 11:57.

The building will house business offices and studios. THE TELEVISION tower, to be erected atop the hotel, will rise 280 feet above the building.

A crew of workmen from the International Derrick and Equipment Company already-is reinforc ing the corner posts of the hotel building to support the added weight of the tower. Hollywood Calling, which started on NBC July 10 (3:30 p. m. Phoenix Time Sun days), is a super-jumbo razzle-daz zle of a giveaway with $31,000 worth of prizes and a lot of glit tering motion picture names to help out. What we're guessing this time is the title of a motion picture and the clues to get this over with right away are as follows: "A man is murdered and yet he lives. "Over a sprawled fallen figure, a person with an upraised arm.

"A woman stands accused of a crime, a crime that never happened. "The voice of one becomes the voice of another. "A man's destiny is changed by the ringing of a bell." THE WISE MONEY around the RCA building seems to think the right answer is Body and Soul but don't hold me responsible if that's wrong. I never saw the picture. Like Stop the Music, Lou Cowan imist bear responsibility for this one which NBC hopes will recap ture some of Jack Benny audience from CBS.

If giveaways are among your enthusiams, this one can be recommended for several reasons. A lot of showmanship has been expended on nothing very much. The roster of prizes has been given, a I suppose was in evitable, a musical background. When, for 4 example, George Mur phy announces "incomparable Maximilian perfume," a. chorus sings tremulously: "Gee, I like to see you looking swell, baby." But, of course, the big gimmick is the Hollywood stars.

If you happen to belong to my sex and if you had been called opening night, the voice on the other end of the wire would have been that of be still my heart! June Allyson. Miss Allyson, who sounded as if she were in an awful hurry to get the whole thing over with, popped the question to several men and they, paralyzed no doubt by the glamor of it all, missed the answers cold. The girls, incidentally, got Walter Pidgeon, an experience that so shattered them that they couldn't name the mystery picture either. LAST WEEK the names were Frank Morgan and Ava Gardner. Miss Gardner was a little peremptory for my taste, but Mr.

Morgan made up for it. George Murphy, the master of ceremonies, could scarcely separate him from the phone. "Hello, Miss Flanagan," he shouted at one point. "Oh, you're near Tacoma, Washington? Well, vou can go into Tacoma and have a good time. Better not plan on me though.

I'm not eligible. Beau tv for beauty. I always say. Actu ally. I don't always say that.

I'd be awfully dull if I kept saying that." And on and on. The highlight of last Sunday's program, to me, at least, came when a man named Leif Gullifson I think that was his name hung up before Murphy got him on the Dhone. Just didn't give a damn, RODEO 8 P. a. THIS WILL be called "sour grapes" by Phoenix politicians. But you're entitled to the facts. You pay taxes for the more than $36,000 a year in salaries for the council and city manager who operate the city's business. Several weeks ago the city manager called for bids on a number of new trucks.

ALL THINGS being equal, the city charter provides that the lowest bid be accepted. Glen-dale Equipment Company bid on about half the trucks to be bought. When the bids were opened, Glendale Equipment Company's bid on six trucks was nearly seven hundred dollars under the next lowest bids. TUESDAY, the council voted to accept the higher bids on the recommendation of the city manager. I asked several councilmen why they ignored a saving of nearly seven hundred dol lars.

A majority bloc councilman was quite frank. Phoenix firms pay city, taxes and should get the city's Saving, the taxpayers money is unimportant. IT DEPENDS on whose ox is being gored. GLENDALE EQUIPMENT CO. NEW L'SED TRUCKS BROWN CARGO VANS TRAILERS PHOENIX Ph.
