"No matter how wonderful the music, the show cannot succeed if the story is weak," he told a seminar for music students. "On the other hand, a show with a good story will be a hit even if the songs are not outstanding." He recommended that the apprentices "not lie afraid to experiment experimentation is the very heart of the musical theater." 5 mutt II it i Religion a.m. (10) Lamp Unto My Feet.

Ugast Took an interest in the lad's career and discussed it with him over a period of several years. By then Yoshio had decided he didn't want to be a manufacturer, or a lawyer.

The conversations with Ugast convinced him that he wanted to be a motion picture producer. And, in August 1958, Yoshio landed at the University of Southern California. Enrolled in a cinema course, Yoshio had a problem with the language barrier: he spoke some English on arrival, but the classes the first year were tough ones. What followed could only happen in Hollywood, Yoshio declares. Hollywood producer Joe Pasternak was scouting campuses for a young Oriental to play a part in his motion picture, Professor William White of the USC faculty suggested that Yoshio talk to Pasternak.

According to the young hopeful, in less time than it takes to tell, he had been interviewed, tested and signed for the part. JERRY HENSHAW of Revue Studios' casting office saw the picture and arranged to screen it for 'McHale's Navy" producer Edward Montagne, who subsequently signed Yoshio to the series. Yoshio is now a senior at USC. Determined to finish his education, he is attending night school while the series is in production.
