The programming is done on the assumption that the records that are going to become hits must be either loud rock or syrupy.

Top 40 radio makes frequent use of jingles, which simply sing the name of the station, hoping, like Pavlov and his salivating dogs, the audience will subliminally associate the call letters with a reward: e. g. a song. ON SUNDAY NIGHTS between 10 and 2 a.m. KRUX has a program entitled the "Krux Underground," which uses album cuts and fewer jingles.

KRIZ, between midnight and 6 a.m., uses some albums and a slightly slower paced format. That's Top 40 in the Valley. KCAC is an entirely different species. KCAC is what is known as free form or "underground" radio. Free-form programming as used by KCAC allows the individual announcer complete discretion.

This allows some of the innovations in rock air time denied under Top 40 programming, as well as opening the door to other musical forms. A typical show on KCAC will include elements of jazz, blues, folk, classical, hillbilly, country, soul and, of course rock. The absence of prescheduled news programs allows occasional hour-and-a-half collages of uninterrupted music. An admirer of rock music and one who keeps in close touch with Valley youth, Davis, 19, was a co-founder of Terros, a drug rehabilitation center for youth, and is currently supervising an independent project to help Valley poor families.) By MARK DAVIS Rock radio has been the dominant force in American broadcasting for years.

Practically every top-rated station in the country today is broadcasting rock music. Phoenix is served by three rock stations KRIZ, KRUX and KCAC. The first two use standard Top 40 format. Top 40 radio is largely responsible for the popular misconception that all rock music is loud, poorly played and written by imbeciles. KRIZ AND KRUX play a very limited selection of 45 rpm singles chosen on the basis of local and national record sales to the 12-to-17-year-old age group, the group which listens the most hours.

As might be expected, playing for this audience does not lead to any heights of musical sophistication, and the popular label "bubblegum music" fits Top 40 radio quite well. Neither KRIZ nor KRUX has any apparent interest in improving the quality of the music they play, which is understandable when viewed from a commercial standpoint. Aesthetically, both stations are unforgivable.
