I happened to be walking behind the pin setting machines at a local bowling center, while on my way to the cleaners. tl In doing so I overheard a most interesting conversation, or rather instructions, from the head pin of the night shift, one 'Hillary Headpin.

"Okay you guys," he said addressing the other nine pins in his unit, "we've got the Twinkle Toes League coming in tonight and I think we should go over a few points. "As most of you know the Twinkle Toes are not the world's greatest bowlers. In fact some of them could qualify for the world's worst. And that's the problem. "The problem being that it is up to us pins to make the night exciting for these people and here's how we're going about it.

This afternoon I had a discussion with Bertha Ball, who as you all know is the shop steward for all the house balls. "It is our opinion that what Is needed is a little more enthusiasm from you pins. Now I'm up in the front all the time and I can't see how you react but I'm going to tell you how you're going to react tonight. "Bertha and her girls are going to do as much as possible, PHOENIX GREYHOUND PARK Official Entries tor Sunday, Oct. 18 FIRST Or.

J--' 'i but it's going to be up to us to carry the load. I don't think that's too much to expect from us now, do you? "First of all there's Strong Arm Sam, you all know him.

He's the one who runs to the foul line and slings the ball down the alley, skidding it halfway here, and then wonders why his arm is sore the next morning. "Anyway when he lets fly, let's try to get some action going for him. After all, if he's going to have a sore arm, we should do our best for him. "Now it has come to my attention that some of you fellas, and listen up No. 8 and No.

10, that some of you have been failing to fall when Harry Hotshot gets up. This came down to me from management and they want it to stop. Particularly since Harry organized the Twinkle Toes so he and his team can win a league title. It would be embarrassing for management should Harry not win. "Also, while we're on the subject of management, here's a new directive.

From now on Gertie Gutter, she's the one who puts an average of 8.3 balls in the gutter every game, will not be called by that name. Management is trying to upgrade the image of the game and the new name for Gert is Clarissa Channel. "Got that Gert's out and Clarissa's in. "NOW I want to talk with you pys for a few minutes about giving the guys and dolls a couple of thrills tonight. Now Nos.

5, 7 and 10 pay particular attention. "I want you guys to wobble a bit before going down. You know, give'm the old head fake every now and then No. 5, let'em trip you. And then when you've lulled them into a false sense of security, stay up no matter what.

"Now are there any questions? Yes, No. 6." "We, the other pins, feel that since you are the duly elected headpin and since so few of the Twinkle Toes ever hit the pocket, leaving you standing most of the time, we, the other nine pins, have voted to have a revolving head pin henceforth so as to give us all a rest." Bill Lorenz is host pro for the tourney, which will be marking its seventh edition.

Last year's test was won by the George Boutell-Payne Palmer III combine. It's still much in planning stage, but the city of Phoenix' proposed Cave Creek course is shaping up as something different for area publinxers. The Phoenix Parks Board recently reviewed prelim plans for the layout, to be located in the 595-acre Cave Creek Park which extends along Cave Creek wash to Greenway Road. It's to be built on a city sanitary landfill, which is something out of the ordinary. Architect Jack Snyder has come across some unusual design problems, created by use of the wash.

Plans call for golfers to hit across wash on two holes, walk across it from green to tees on two others. Design calls for a 6320-yard, par-72 stretch. Financing would be from monies accumulated in the golf "trust" fund established by the Park Board 10 months ago. Thunderbird CC's readying for its 11th annual invitational tourney, a partners best-ball match play event. Those scores on Skyline CC's par-5 dogleg 18th will become laughable mementoes down through the years for the pair of unlucky pros. Incidentally, Skyline isn't all that bad.
