GRANITE REEF RD. Scottsdale RENT Color TV NEW SETS ONLY EMERSON $10 Weekly $25 Monthly With Purchase Option E. Van Burea at 16th By JACK GOULD New York Times Service NEW YORK Television's coverage of the Democratic National Convention has been a striking study in extremes. Thanks to Jesse M. Unruh, leader of the large California delegation, there was presented unexpectedly yesterday what many have long sought a face-to-face confrontation involving Vice President Hubert H.

Humphrey, Sen Eugene J. McCarthy and Sen. George S. McGovem. The debate, which the networks taped in installments and then sent by motorcycle couriers to their control points in the International Amphitheater, was a thoroughly civilized and often good-humored exchange.

The appearance of the three major candidates for the Democratic nomination truly afforded a viewer an opportunity to compare the men and their opinions. Unruhacieved what the networks alone have been unable to do: Persuade the candidates' to speak to the same points at the same time. THE DEBATE removed any lingering doubts of their value in helping a viewer to reach an assessment of litical contestants. The ground rules were simple opening statements, an opportunity for questions to specific members of the trio, a chance for a reply to each other's remarks and closing summations. Unruh was able to arrange 'this debate because the three major candidates want to collect the 174 votes of the California delegations.

The debate which had to be taped because of the strike of telephone workers, was carried by the American Broadcasting the Columbia Broadcasting System and the National Broadcasting Co. 28, 1968 Chicago The television networks complaint that their convention coverage would be hobbled by strikes and other limitations were not evident on the home screen. By means of peripheral cameras staged above the camera floor, both NBC and CBS were able to zero in on their full quotas of floor reporters during a Monday session that began as torturous tedium and built to chaos and demonstrations over the seating of rival Georgia delegations so at times, the networks were trying to cover three stories at once, all within the convention hall. TWO LADIES put the confusion and undertone of gloom at the convention into prompt focus on the home screen. Aretha Franklin sang what to many ears, notably those of a thoroughly rattled orchestra, was the first soul version of "The Star-Spangled musically, the generation gap was never so wide. Shirley MacLaine, the actress, spoke a few words which, on TV, carried more personal impact than all the tapes and pictures of Mayor Richard J.

Daley's armored columns, barbed wire and temporary fences shielding delegates from the. sight of ugly ghettos. To gain entrance to the amphitheater to participate in democracy, she said simply, her pocketbook was first thoroughly searched. Once again, ABC outdrew each of its rivals in the early popularity ratings by offering entertainment from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., when nothing was happening in Chicago. If experience from the Republican convention is a guide, this lead will subside as the Chicago convention nears its nominating climax.
