It's made to correspond with the traditional starting times at Mexican bullrings from which KPAZ will get most of its videotaped action. Occasional bullfight film from Spain will be in black-and-white and will appear less often and less immediately.

(Mexican fights may be only a week or so old when you see them, but the Spanish sequences will tend to be KPAZ isn't backing away from the violence and the controversy of bullfighting. The name of the Sunday show is "Death in the Afternoon," after Hemingway's virtual phone book on the subject. Whether you'll like "Death in the Afternoon" (KPAZ', not Hemingway's) will depend on your personal preference and philosophy. The programming" doesn't have many exceptions at KPAZ, if the phrase can be used as a noun form for "unique." A sixth station might seem to have all the auspices of a fifth wheel, but, from both the inside and outside, KPAZ looks optimistic. It boasts (j41.000 watts, the highest output in the state.

Its taping facilities and the space at its disposal are no poor man's NBC, but elaborate, modern, and thorough, and it'll all be headquartered in the new refrigerated mall at Tower Plaza. Its news coverage is both exorbitant and Bullfighting may be the KPAZ marquee, but it'll be backed up by boxing, jai alai, wrestling, and Canadian hockey. KPAZ wjll televise a Mexican movie and regular Mexican TV shows that will originate south Of the border and not be mere American programs in translation. The broadcast day, longest in Phoenix television, begins at 6 a.m.; the whole forenoon will go to the AP news, which will also close the day at 1 a.m., with the sports and other shows in between. Thomson, once an English major at a Michigan college, came to TV with no more background than a time-to-time viewer.

He said he just "got to thinking" why Spanish-language programs couldn't bo a boom, and decided they could. He's so confident of KPAZ' success-to-be that he intends to pioneer four more stations like it across the country. Among his bilingual staff is Ivo Luis Alonso, who will do a 30-minute live and local newscast daily at 6:45 p.m. Alonso has for credentials a seven-year assignment as senior Latin American editor of the Voice of America. But he began in Phoenix 10 years earlier as a radio jockey.

The station's general manager is Shirley Clum, whose career in Phoenix is about as old as the soundwaves. He's been a TV newscaster, a commercial announcer, and a director on other stations. Gov. Williams, Barry Goldwater, and Mayor Graham are probable guest partners at the Spanish showcase that will start KPAZ going Saturday at 9 a.m. Then, the next afternoon at 5, the first bullfight.

and, undoubtedly, the first letters of protest and praise. By STEWART ALLEN Republic TV Critic Don Thomson doesn't like the term "Spanish-language station," but the fact remains that over at KPAZ they answer the telephone, "Buenos dias." And that's the least of it. Thomson, president of the station, will be bringing the Valley its sixth television channel, effective Saturday morning with a "grand opening." From then on, KPAZ is Spanish for will be waging the war of the ratings with what Thomson calls "counter programing." Translated, this means a media mix of 70 per cent English, 30 per cent Spanish. KPAZ (alias Channel 21) will be Arizona's first UHF station. Again translated, this means you either have to own an ultra-high-frequency adapter for your TV set or a set already equipped intrinsically for UHF.

If you do, your reward will be a seat in the sombra for bullfighting on Sunday afternoons. The bullfights (in English) aren't the whole KPAZ package, but they're probably the most controversial and "counter-programmed" part of the schedule. Thomson's theory is that, by presenting bullfights, Mexican commercials, and real Mexican programs, KPAZ is not only serving the Latins here, but avoiding competition either with other commercial stations or with NET. The theory seems sound. There is no real similarity between what KPAZ intends and what the networks offer, unless the Mexican soap opera on the docket might be called a Latin "Peyton Place." Thomson and everyone else agree that bullfights are the attention-getter.

The station logotype is a charging bull. The public, too, is at times a charging bull. At both KPAZ and The Arizona Republic, the people have let it be known that "this dreadful, bloody slaughter should be banned from the airwaves." They have also celebrated that "this magnificent art has finally been brought to television." Take your pick, when bullfighting (in color) premieres next Sunday at 5 p.m. and, thereafter, recurs every week for two 1 I I techniqued. KPAZ plans 90 hours a week of Associated Press coverage in English and will literally teletype the stories on the video screen.
