The Michigan naturalist said there are "serious gaps" in the "monophyletic" theory that the first living cell changed into complex manycelled forms of life, developing first into animals without backbones and then progressing through fish, amphibians, reptiles, early mammals and primates to man. "The typical evolutionary explanation doesn't make sense in view of today's knowledge," Moore said. "The monophyletic explanation is more illogical than The educator said the evolutionary theory has "flunked" tests based on the study of chromosome counts.

In fact, he said, chromosome counts show man ranking lower than frogs and toads. "The test of chromosome number and quality of gene material carried by chromosomes as a possible source of empirical basis for the monophyletic scheme results in complete failure," Moore said. "Absolutely no pattern of increase of chromosome number from less complex to most complex is at all detectable." Moore's study included a chart depicting the monophyletic pattern compared with chromosome information. The chart, he said, might be the first of its kind. "It resolves the question, 'Did life begin spontaneously just once, many He said.

"Since we have the gaps and inconsistencies in the records, it's reasonable to conjecture that there were multiple beginnings of life." Moore said there also is no scientific evidence of links between major kinds of plants and that the study of fossils had not shown any connection between plants and animals. "No transitional forms have been found in the fossil record, very probably because no transitional forms exist in the fossil stage at all," he said. "Very likely, transitions between animal kinds and transitions between plant kinds have never occurred."
