Baking Tuna Cheesewiches and mixing Cocoa Peanut Logs, however, sounds as American as baseball and as simple as a quick trip to the local market. Both cooking experiences are part of the routine for Karen Burda.

She is married to Phoenix Giants first baseman Bob Burda. And baseball itself calls the play. For Karen, it's always a double play. The winter season may be spent in South America; summers in Phoenix or San Francisco. After six years as a baseball wife, she has the assurance and ad lib ability of a major league umpire.

Packing, moving, cooking, entertaining and the care and feeding of two daughters are part of the game. When the Giants are in town, breakfast is at 10 a.m. and the big meal of the day is around 4 in the afternoon. When the team is on the road, the three Burda girls eat lightly, their main dishes being the foods Karen prepares for Bob's after -game snack when he is home. Karen met Bob when both were attending Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

She had less than a year to go for her elementary education degree. (She still intends to get it.) At 19, Bob had signed his first professional contract with the St. Louis Cardinals but was getting his degree in business management, term by term, "with straight A's," says his wife. From outfield to infield, from the Cards to the Pittsburg Pirates organization to the Giants' chain, Bob progressed steadily. The Burdas have friends on almost every team in organized ball; they think baseball people are a special, and mostly wonderful, group.

Last summer their Scottsdale apartment was the team's central meeting place. Bob may invite all the single guys for dinner or visiting players from Seattle or Tacoma, or both groups! When the team is out of town, Karen thinks nothing of asking ALL the wives, plus children. She'd hate to leave anyone out. This may be one reason they just bought a house with a large yard and swimming pool. A big salad, meat, a dessert when company comes and gallons of iced tea for Bob is the main meal menu.

He is on top of the play all the way at the barbecue: basted chicken, ribs or lean pork steaks are his specialties. Karen makes a rich Raspberry Rib- Mrs. Robert Burda a moist crumb secret by Ellen Cooke.
