State Dept. tries something new for Soviet tour ALL EDITIONS 4-N The Arizona Republic Phoenix, Sunday, July 30, 1972 lIjrriETil Hardy Price Team is hard to beat Summer i Sunday opeciai In all the excitement created by the release of Roberta Flack's First Time Ever album, a lot of people have overlooked yet another very good around such larger works as the Beethoven Sepet, Schubert Octet, and Spohr Nonet. They included smaller combinations of winds and strings, and at times the two groups played their own repertory, such as the string quartets of Elliott Carter and Samuel Barber and the wind quintet of Ingolf Dahl. By the time the players had made their way through Leningrad, Moscow, Kiev, Tif-lis. Yerevan, Baku and Co-netsk, they had been heard by approximately 16.000 peoplenot a bad figure for chamber music that is rarely performed or unknown.

Mat- thew Raimondi, first violinist of the string quartet, and David Glazer, clarinetist of the-woodwind quintet, reported that very warm and genuinely interested audiences greeted them wherever they went. No hostility was shown to the American works, although Carter might be considered somewhat radical for the kind of musical fare the Russians are used to. In fact, Raimondi and Glazer said, they listened patiently, with a growing absorption in the works. The applause would crescendo impressively when the performance was over. They met with the members arately to Sofia, Bulgaria, where it spent a week participating in a music festival.

Again, the audiences were excellent, but Raimondi said that the concert hall was poor, as opposed to the outstanding auditoriums wherever they went in Russia. They also met with the local composers' union, and this time heard a work for string quartet and orchestra that they liked very much. For Raimondi, there were noticeable sociological changes going from Russia to Bulgaria. "The atmosphere was much more open," he said. "The men's legs were longer and the women's sklrtt shorter." of the composers' unions in Yerevan and i 1 i They found, as many others have, that the music of these official groups was not modern and not very stimulating.

More rewarding seems to have been the exchanges with solo players in local orchestras. These went beyond discussions. The State Department includes in the tour budget money for the purchase of recordings, books, mutes, reeds, strings, which the players could give to the Soviet musicians. These are durable gifts that help the latter to remember the Americans' visit. After the Russian tour, the Composer's Quartet went sep By RAYMOND ERICSON New York Times Service NEW YORK The cultural presentations program of our State Department is not always involved with the glamorous (ballet, symphony orchestras) and the newsworthy (jazz, pop, rock).

For one thing, the larger groups cost too much to send abroad. For another, cultural attaches in the embassies think it wise that the program occasionally show a change of pace. So last May, it put together the Composer's String Quartet and the New York Woodwind Quintet, threw in A 1 i Brehm, double-bass player, for good measure and sent them on a 19-concert tour of the Soviet Union. The programs were built DINNERS Served 12 to 5 PM Regular Menu 12 to 10 PM 43rd Ave fc Northern 931-377 i For The Food You Like Best 13 Different Restaurants Paul Shank's INCOMPARABLE r.t SUNDAY BRUNCH Bar-B-Que Corral Chick 'n Fish Italian Kitchen Pancake Palace Peter Fonq Plush Puppy Seafood Bar Spanish Kitchen Steak 'n Stein Yum Yum Tree Bakery S3 Tina, by all means she's great most of the time. But to hear Ike working out on his own, well it's a whole new ball game.

Ads in the trade papers and underground papers, would make you think that Ike wasn't that crazy about releasing this album, but I have to go against the line of thought. It's the single best thing I've heard Ike and the group do. And at the same time United Artists was letting that one out of the bag, here comes Ike Tina together with Feel Good (United Art-ists UAS 5598). It's up to the usual Ike Tina standards, with Tina getting the spotlight, which isn't all that bad. However the timing seems bad, as record buyers not familiar with Ike will likely go with the established duo, rather than try the Ike solo album and that would be a loss.

Another black singer who has been gaining a lot of fame outside the rhythm and blues market lately is Billy Preston. Taking care of the backup musicians at George Harrison's Bangladesh concert was no little help. And Preston's I Wrote A Simple Song 3507) acknowledges that, with Preston giving thanks to Harrison, i Jones, David T. Walker and Bobby Womack, all of who play on the album. Jones was in complete control of the strings and horns, which are used most effectively with Preston's voice and keyboard work.

With the exception of three numbers, all the tunes are penned by Preston and he seems more at home with his own work than that of others. Top rated is the title tune and "Outa-Space." But it's been creeping up on all the charts, top 40, soul, rhythm and blues the works. Miss Flack has teamed with Donny Hathaway and they came away with Roberta Flack Donny Hathaway (Atlantic SE 7216). And the combination is a hard one to beat as the duo has chosen 10 solid numbers to showcase their talent.

A sure winner is Carole King's "You've Got A Friend," but also top rated are "You've Lost That Loving Feeling," and "Where Is Love." All of the arrangements are by Roberta and Donny and show a real genius for such work. This record could do much in putting Hathaway before a larger public than he's previously enjoyed. And it's very deserving, for Hatha-wav has a range and style which is uncommon among black singers of today. Columbia has issued a two-record set in tribute to the late Mahalia Jackson, simply titled, The Great Mahalia Jackson (Columbia KG 31379). Perhaps great is not as pood an adjective to fit Miss Jackson, but when one starts searching for one, great is the first thing that comes to mind.

For not only was she a great singer, she was a great person. What Columbia has done is package the best of Miss Jackson. It rocks with "When The Saints Go Marching In," and rolls with, "Down By the Riverside." However, Miss Jackson was at her best when singing the word of God. It's all here, "The Lord's Praver," "In The Garden," "A Mighty For-tress Is Our God," and "Onward Christian Soldiers." Since Ike Tina Turner have become so popular, a lot of folks have forgotten that Ike is a highly accomplished blues singer in his own right. In fact he had a very successful group going in St.

Louis before Tina, on a dare from friends, walked up to the bandstand and asked for a chance to sing. Since that time Ike has been known more as an arranger, guitar player, in fact just about everything but a singer. However he sets the record straight with Ike Turner Blues Roots (United Artists UAS 5576). It's a nice break, a very nice one.
