Valuable prizes will be awarded to amateurs "Poppy Day" Proclamation In observance of Poppy Day Saturday by Post 350, American Legion. Mayor Stanley Ostroski today issued a proclamation calling upon the citizenry to support the sale of poppies here. The proclamation in part follows: Recognizing that victory for America in the World War was purchased at a frightful cost in lives and suffering, and that the citizens of Nanticoke, together with all other citizens of our country, owe a lasting debt of gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives and health to make that victory possible, I deem it fitting that the citizens of our city should once each year honor the dead and aid the living by wearing the Memorial Day poppy of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.

On Saturday, May 27, the women of the American Legion Auxiliary, working as volunteers, will offer to the people of Nanticoke paper poppies made by the Disalbled World War veterans in replica of the wild poppies which bloomed on the battlefields of France and Belgium. The poppy is recognized throughout the world as the symbol of World War sacrifice. All contributions made for the flower are expended for the welfare of the living victims of the war. Wearing the poppy performs the dual purpose of paying tribute to the dead and contributing to the welfare of the living. Now, therefore, Stanley Ostrow-ski, mayor of the City of Nanticoke, do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 27, Poppy Day.

Game Washed Out Starting in the first inning a terrific electrical storm washed out Sunday's game between the Ber-Mil team and Towanda. A large crowd was in the Bernice grandstand to witness the season's first encounter between the two ancient rivals and interest in the conflict was os intense that no one left until the field ws completely saturated and it was obvious that the game could not possibly go on. The game ended with a 3-1 score in favor of the local club when Jupe Pluvlus interrupted before the Ber-Mil had fairly got underway with their half of the fatal first frame. There was no one out on the Bernice side at this stage of the game and two runners were holding down sacks. The teams will meet as soon as a convenient open date is found.

Next Sunday Bernice-Mildred plans to take over a Nanticoke club on the Bernice diamond. C.B. Rosengrant Feted At Dinner Charles B. T. U. Among Employes; May Halt Progress Dissension among employees of Alden Coal Comany, involving men of rival union factions, today loomed as a stumbling block to whatever possibilities there are of having the company collieries reopened. At their meeting last night, at Li-put's Hall, members of the Progressive Miners Union were advised to ignore a meeting call issued by an Employes Committee member following the meeting with company officials at Alden, Monday night. It was charged that the time and place of the meeting "on Thursday coincides with the time and place of the regular United Mine Workers meeting.

Progressive Miners were of the opinion that the meeting should have been called for an when neither union will have a meeting, and that the 5-man employees committee should preside at that meeting arther than the chairman of either of the union factions. Progress with the Alden Coal Company on reopening plans canot be made until one union represents the workers group, with which unit the company might bargain on economics for reopening. Excavating Firms School Director John Shivell at last night's special meeting censured all coal stripping operators who have left mounds of dirt and gaping holes near the Plains high school athletic stadium. Director Shivell pointed out that these companies do not pay any taxes towards the township and leave destruction and possible tragedy in their wake. "We are not going to have a tragedy similar to the one in Wilkes-Barre township where a bus laden with school children met tragedy as a result ef a hole filled with stagnant water.

The stripping operators at work near the Memorial high school athletic field are piling the premises with dirt that look like little mountains and water seeps into the holes that have been excavated leaving tne township with a health menace on their hands. "We will ask our solicitor, A. J. Zawoiski, to contact the township commissioners to investigate this matter in view of the fact that thousands of people come to the athletic stadium yearly, and in order to avert tragedy, something must be done about this." As a result, Solicitor Zawoiski was given authorization to immediately contact the board of commissioners to work in unison with the school board to have the operators level off any excavating done in the township. The board held a discussion on the bids submitted for furniture to the new Plainsville school building, a six-room grade school being erected as a WPA project.

Further contacts must be- made with the PWA department at Harrisburg before final action can be taken. All school directors were present at last night's meeting. School Examinations Supervising Principal M. V. Hughes announces that high school examinations will be on May 31, June 1 and 2.
