Halimon Hopes European Cage Loop Success NEW YORK (AP) Shaler Halimon, one of the better-known U.S. athletes headed for the new European Professional Basketball League, hopes the change will inject new life into his failing career. "This is really a tremendous opportunity," said Halimon after he was selected by the Switzerland Alpines as their top choice in the EPBL's draft, which netted more than 200 players. Halimon, 29, had been a journeyman forward in the National and American Basketball associations since leaving Utah State in 1968. The 6-foot-5 player averaged 6.3 points a game over five -pro seasons. . Halimon, who last played for Dallas of the ABA during the 1972-73 season, became the first established pro to say he would sign a player contract for the eight-team league's first season. Indicating that the top players on the EPBL teams—which begin their 42- game schedules Jan. 17—likely will earn up to $25,000 a year, Halimon said he was happy about the chance to play in Europe. "I've always wanted to visit Switzerland," he said. "The only foreign country I've ever been to in my life is Canada." The No. 1 player selected in the EPBL's initial draft was Gene Moore, a 6-9 forward chosen immediately ahead of Halimon. Moore, 29, who left St. Louis University in 1968, played in the ABA for Kentucky, TexasDallas, New York and San Diego- He averaged 12.9 points per game during those five seasons. "We're not going to get Tough Break NEW ORLEANS (AP) Talk about playing hurt, New Orleans safety Jerry Moore hung tough through the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Rams with a broken ankle. Now he's out for the rest of the year. "He apparently broke his ankle in the third quarter of our victory over the Rams," a spokesman for the National Football League said. "But he played the entire fourth quarter with the broken ankle." into a bidding war with the NBA and ABA," said Dick Davis, the chief EPBL administrator, when questioned about the draft, dominated by marginal pros from the two major leagues. Others selected in the first round were: 3, Munich, Bob Hosier, College of St. Thomas (Minn.), 7-4'/z; 4, London, Ron Richardson, Texas Tech, 6-10; 5, Madrid, Pete Cross, San Francisco, 69; 6, .Lyon-Grenoble, Roger Brown, Kansas, 6-11; 7, Belgium, Eddie Mast, Temple, 6-9; and 8, Israel, John Fultz, Rhode Island, 66. Munich's Larry Jones, a 66 former Toledo star, and Belgium's John Vajlely, a 6-5 former UCLA athlete, have agreed to become player- coaches in the league, which will have a headquarters in Munich. The EPBL, dominated by U.S. owners, was originally called the .International Basketball Association.
