BROWN UPI Travel Editor ;Z While fuel prices and other operating costs have gone up during the past year, the family automobile still is the favorite means of transportation for vacationing Americans. At the same time, however, the slump in new car sales, as reported from Detroit, indicates Americans are holding on longer to the .old family buggy, thus increasing chances of expensive major repairs. ! Probably the best way to keep your car operating at top efficiency is through preventative maintenance, such as having your mechanic check it over in spring and fall for engine tune-ups and replacing air and oil filters, spark plugs and points when necessary. Thpro nr nnmhpr nf measures car owners can take themselves which could help to prevent big repair bills. Maintenance requirements vary and the motorist should consult his owner's manual for specific tios and procedures. Hertz Rent A Car, which has about 70,000 vehicles to maintain in top condition in the United States alone, notes many of the maintenance checks performed by its mechanics require sophisticated equipment. But it said there are others which can be done by motor ists at little or no expense. These include: 1. Cleaning and rotating the air filter on the carburetor 180 degrees every 2,000 to 3,000 miles depending on road conditions for fuel economy. 2. Checking transmission, rear end and power steering fluids once a month. Drain and change as recommended in the owner's manual. 3. Replacing the oil filter with every oil change in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions using a good grade of oil. Check air conditioner, fan, alternator or generator and power-steering belts at the same time. 4. Replacing the antipollution positive crankcase ventilation valve with every engine tune-up. 5. Keeping the battery filled with distilled water and cleaning terminals regularly to insure full charge from alternator or generator, particularly during the winter. B. Checking the master brake cylinder fluid level and brake linings at least once a month. If brakes are moist, there may be leaks in the wheel cylinders, and you could end up without brakes. 7. Inspecting radiator and heater hoses monthly for leaks and cracks which could result not only in engine overheating but loss of expensive antifreeze. 8. Check tire pressure including spare weekly for longer tire life and to help conserve fuel. 9. Inspecting windshield wipers periodically to prevent streaking, and changing blades at least twice a year or earlier if the rubber is dried out. Check the washers at the same time. 10. Lubricating the car at the mileage or time recommended by the makers, but TRAVELSLIDES A slide program on Phoenix resident Carlton Anderson's bus trip through Scandinavia will be presented at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Phoenix Adult Center, 2240 W. By MARIE MATTSON NEW YORK - Your own conduct largely assures" your security in a hotel. Management does everything it can to provide for the safety of your person and property, but you must cooperate. - I asked Mrs. Jetta Brenner, general manager of the Sheraton Russell on New York's fashionable East Side, for suggestions helpful to guests. Although the Sheraton Russell is a small European style hotel, Mrs. Brenner also has been associated with big convention-type properties. Here are her recommendations for assuring a pleasurable stay at any reputable hotel: Leave your expensive furs and jewels at home a hotel is not responsible for their safety. They are among items most frequently stolen. If you do bring them and must leave them behind when you go out, ask the desk to have your door double locked. Only one or two executives have this special key. When you're ready to leave, call the desk and someone will come up and lock your door .The staff will not be able to get in, though a professional burglar still could pick the locks. If you : must bring large amounts of cash or jewelry. put them in the hotel safe. But remember, in the event of loss from a safe, a hotel is liable for only a set amount $500 in New York. In North America, rules and regulations posted in your room usually state Labilities. However, in many other parts of the world such information may be lacking. ; Other high-theft items include . cameras, pocket calculators, electric razors and drugs such as sleeping pills, and tranquilizers. The safest, thing is to carry the items with you, but this may not be convenient. Another alternative to discourage a spur-of-the-moment theft is to put things away rather than leaving them lying in the open. ' ' Money, credit cards and traveler's checks if not in the hgtel safe ( always should be in our pocket or purse never left in your roomV Any hiding place you can find, a thief already knows about. " Avoid . carrying large amounts of money; cash small traveler's checks every day. . When you're in your room double lock it by pushing in the button; also, put on the key chain., If a workman knocks on your door saying he has come to fix something that you haven't requested, check with his supervisor or the desk before you admit him. Don't open your door, either, to accept a package that you aren't expecting. Muggers and burglars use these ruses to gain entry to your room. when you pay or sign a restaurant check, verify the addition if it's hand totaled. Older women especially tend to sign without looking. Employees aren't necessarily dishonest, but many of them can't add.If you've put a ' meal on your credit card and are adding the tip, write in the exact amount not just-15 per cent.
