The terra "mentally or physically defective" means not only cripples-and those mentally defective but persons 3n ill' health and the aged. In order to be entitled to the $400 credit, the taxpayer must furnish the dependant his or her chief support. The credit is based upon actual financial dependency and not mere legal dependency. For example, a father whose children receive half or more -of their support from a trust fund or other separate source is not entitled to the credit. Neither relationship nor residence is a factor in the allowance of the $400 credit for a dependent.

The taxpayer and the dependent may be residents of different cities. If husband and wife both contribute to the support of a dependent, the $400 credit may be taken by the one contributing the chief support, and may noe be divided between them. In the West Indies, Beebe and a colleague entrusted themselves to the bathysphere, a globe of tough steel with windows of fuzed quartz, and descended to the record depth of'2200 feet. 10 times as far down as a diver ordinarily descends.

The sea there Is practically dark and strange fishes grow fantastically and either lose their sight altogether or aid it with light organs of various kinds. On one occasion Beebe was in bathysphere at a rather shallow depth as the ship towed it forward slowly to permit the observers to study the life of the sea bottom. Suddenly the gray shadow of a cliff of coral reef loomed ahead. Beebe signalled frantically to his mates' above, who hoisted the globe at top speed. The.sphere grazed the top of the roof as it moved forward, and narrowly missed being flicked, off the" end of its cable.

Beebe showed colored slides of a large number of strange fishes brought up in long nets sent down to much greater depths than the bathysphere coulcl go. When brought up carefully and warmed gradually many of the specimens remained "alive for some time. The depth of 2,200 feet the bathysphere reached is not great In comparison to the lowest depths of the. sea Some of the deepest recordings more than 30,000 feet, have been taken- in the West Indies. The West Indian seas were chosen by Beebe for his bathysphere explorations because of the sharp variations in depths which give opportunities for observation of highly varied conditions and specimens within a short cruising range.
