The Cowboys' impressive victory, second in as many weeks, boosted them into the Western Athletic Conference lead with a 1-0 record. The setback evened Arizona State at 1-1. The alert Cowboy secondary picked off three of ASU quarterback John Goodman's passes in the first quarter and scored on each occasion.

Wyoming ran up a 17-0 first period margin and was never in danger, as A-State's offense bogged down for three quarters. "We just weren't mentally prepared for this -game," dejected ASU coach Frank Kush said afterward. Don Kessinger opened with a single. After faking a bunt toward first base, Beckert pushed a single past Wes Parker as the Los Angeles first baseman charged on the next pitch. This hit-and-run maneuver sent Kessinger to third, and the Cubs' shortstop scored on Billy Williams' infield out.

Jimmy Stewart, a surprise starter in center for the Cubs, cut down the Dodgers' first scoring opportunity in the third with a fine throw. Wes Parker opened with a single, stole second and was out at the plate, Stewart to catcher Randy Hundley, on Maury Wills' single up the middle. Wills then stole second, but Dick Scho-field fanned for the third out. (Continued on Page 8-C) From WIRE SERVICES The National League pennant race rp-parently isn't over yet. While the pace-setting Los Angeles Dodgers yesterday were being shut out by last-place Chicago, 4-0, Pittsburgh sneaked to within 14 games of the top spot with a come-from-behind 8-6 victory over Atlanta.

Just a few days ago the Dodgers possessed what appeared to be a commanding 3Vi-game bulge. Even San Francisco, almost hopelessly out of it, kept its faint hopes alive with a 13-inning, 9-5 decision over Houston. That still, however, left the Giants four games behind Los Angeles and 24 back of the Bucs. Ferguson Blanks LA Cub rookie pitcher Ferguson Jenkins was author of the whitewash job on the Dodgers yesterday. Chicago scored on infield outs in the first and fourth innings and picked up two more in the eighth on a single by Jimmy Stewart and a passed ball.

Kansas Uses 2nd Quarter Spree to Swamp Arizona have mattered what we did." The Sun Devils, threatened with their first shutout in nine games (the last was 13-0 to Utah State last year) finally got on the scoreboard in the last quarter. Goodman, who went all the way while completing 12 of 28 passes for 181 yards, guided the Devils 80 yards in eleven plays midway through the period. The payoff came on a 12-yard heave to sophomore end Fair Hooker in the right flat. Arizona State penetrated the Wyoming 20 on only one other occasion, driving to the 17 before stalling near the end. A-State stayed in the hole during most of the first half, thanks primarily to the booming kicks of Jerry DePoyster.

During that frustrating first half, ASU had the ball on nine occasions, punting four times, giving up the ball on interceptions three times, fumbling once and stalling once. Swift defensive back Vic Washington provided the first break when he darted in front of a Goodman aerial meant for Ken Dyer and returned it to ASU's 26. Seven plays later, with the hosts stalled at the 23, DePoyster toed a 39-yard field goal. Goodman, who was second in the nation in pass interception avoidance last year (losing just four), had his next attempt swiped by Dick Speights. The 5-foot-ll junior raced 34 yards for a touchdown and DePoyster added the PAT with 7:34 left in the quarter.

Washington and Speights put Wyoming in business again with 1:29 showing. Washington tipped Goodman's aerial to John Pitts, Speights hauled it in at mid-field and returned to ASU's 38. Cowboy quarterback Rick Eg-loff, who connected on 9 of 19 for 150 yards, immediately threw the bomb. Wingback Hub Lindsey had slipped behind Pitts. He took it in full stride at the 15 and loped in.

DePoyster kicked Wyoming to a 17-0 lead with 1:23 still to go in the opening quarter. The Devils, who picked up only 61 yards rushing, finally mounted their only sustained drive of the first half. With Jim Bramlet cracking up the middle and Goodman hitting Hooker and Dyer for nine yards each, the Devils moved from i 20 to the Wyoming 22. There, Goodman was smeared on a fourth down passing situation. Washington, who was a demon on defense all day, set the Cowboys in motion late in the first half with a 27-yard runback of Ken Hornbeck's 52 yard punt.

With Egloff picking the Devils' pass defense apart and Jim (Continued on Page 5-C) Buda taking the ball on the 10 and sprinting to payoff. The conversion kick was blocked and Arizona still was ahead, 7-6. But not for long. Rick Johnson fumbled on the second play after the kickoff, Kansas took over on the Arizona 17 and had a touchdown in six plays. John Jackson stepped the final yard through the middle for the score.

The conversion run failed and there still was flame in the Wildcat firebox and 3:26 left to play in the quarter with Kansas leading 12-7. But then it started raining touchdowns Kansas type. When Arizona couldn't move on three plays, Joe Payton punted to Shankland who caught on his 31 and shot like a rocket through the heart of the Arizona defense. By the time he was at midfield he had no pursuit and streaked the remainder of his 69-yard scamper untouched. The clock showed 2:58.

With Arizona throwing in desperation, the ball on the 'Cats 39, Kansas' Bill Hunt streaked in to intercept a Reed pass on the 47 and run it over for the TD. A short pogo-pass over the line, Bouda to Buda, added the conversion. The clock showed 1:56 left. Incredibly, Kansas added still (Continued on Page 4-C) 11 11 If By FRANK GIANELLI Republic Sports Writer TUCSON Agile Kansas came from behind, scored five touchdowns in eight minutes and crushed University of Arizona, 35-3, here last night. Defeat ruined Arizona's home football opener before a shocked throng of 33,250, and left the Wildcats winless after two games.

Interceptions ruined Arizona in the first half. Fumbles destroyed them in the second. And overall and overlong, Kansas' blitzing halfbacks kept Arizona frenzied. Kansas scored its first TD with 6:21 left in the first half. Before the midgame gun sounded, they had added three more on a six-yard play 22-yard march, Don Shanklin's 69-yard punt return, and a 47-yard pass interception run.

Arizona scored in the first quarter on Mark Reed's 11-yard pass to Jim Greth and again in the fourth on Rick Johnson's one-yard smash capping a 90-yard drive. FIRST QUARTER Arizona started in trouble and fell deeper as the night got darker. The kickoff was fumbled for no advance. The first Wildcat play was a pass and Kansas intercepted. After going nowhere, Kansas punted and the ball took a bad bounce, stopping on the Arizona 3 instead of tumbling into the end zone as the Wildcat receiver expected.

Arizona's staunch defense was a first quarter highlight with Jerry Thompson one of the key stoppers halting a Kansas drive that penetrated to Arizona's 24 before bogging. Arizona's deepest first quarter thrust moved from the 'Cats 36 to the Kansas 39 from where Don Wilhelm misfired on a field goal attempt. SECOND QUARTER Arizona's best and only burst of first half glory came four minutes into the second quarter when, with Kansas attempting to pass from its 28, junior de-fenseman Marty Hutchinson intercepted a pass on the 34 and ran it back to the 11. Reed needed just one pitch-to halfback Jim Greth to get the touchdown, and Wilhelm added the conversion kick. Then the sky collapsed on the Cats.

Kansas paraded 75 yards in 12 plays on a ground-air mixture capped with a 30 yard ping-pong pass play that went laterally from Dave Bouda to Don Shankland who threw to Sandy Buda for the touchdown.
