Charles E. Smith, who mends West High's gridiron gladiators and tends the stockroom, has noticed a definite trend toward bigger boys in the past seven years. "Shoes and helmet tell the story," Smith said. "Used to be we could get by mostly sire 9 shoes or smaller and maybe one or two size It's. "This year we stocked hardly any size 9's.

We have half a dozen shod in 11 and ll'2's. three or four in 12's, and one size 1." Helmets ar tha same way, Smith noted. "This year's crop seems to have the largest head sizes," he pointed out, observing that it had nothing to do with the fact that West is defending co-champs in Class AA. "In the past five or so years helmet sizes have jumped from an average of size 7 to 7'4 and Smith, who lives at 420 E. Fairmont, started at West almost by accident.

"I was looking for a job and West High needed an equipment man, so we just got together." Since then he boned up on splints, tape, liniment, and massage to th point where he was able to take over athletic training duties. The most frequent Injury, Smith notes, is to ankles and knees. And he points out reasons for both. seems to be a big factor in ankle and knee injuries," be laid. "Many timet youngster won't demand a good fit in shoes, then he doesn't protect himself properly on the field.

But they're still boys and can only learn through experience not to take unnecessary chances." Sept. Window Sent. 20 Glendalc 11 Sept. 27 Sunny-slope a Oct. 1 Prescott A Ort.

This is the bridge type pad that pokes out to protect the entire shoulder, but because of a web girder the padding doesn't touch the shoulder. "It does a wonderful job of preventing shock in the shoulder bone," he declared.

West had just one broken shoulder bone in the past two or three seasons and all the credit goes to this pad." Smith isn't one to lament the "good old days" of sock 'em football. Scitt.srisle Sept. 1.1 Sept. 20 Sept. 27 IS Oct.
