mi Ail EDITH! 8-A The Arizona Republic Phoenix, Sept. 18, im Geneticists Say Computers Vital to Proper Heredity Study today require close collaboration between mathematicians and biologists, reports from the meeting indicated. The development of special centers and programs to facilitate this collaboration was recommended. The meeting was held at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, early this week under the sponsorship of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. at the most in which to study these vanishing small groups of primitives.

Among the most interesting unsolved problems In human genetics, according to the reports, is that of the so-called auto-immune diseases. In which the body's natural defense mechanisms react in an allergy-like fashion against certain of the patient's own tissues. THERE IS increasing evidence that genes may pre-dTspose some persons to this kind of reaction, the geneticists said. In addition to an urgent need for computer techniques and automation, the reports also cited the need for major registries of diseases that may be important genetically, and the need to study human populations on a much larger scale than has been attempted. By HAROLD M.

SCHMECK JR. New York Times Service WASHINGTON The science of human genetics must make wider use of computers if it is to solve the important problems of the future, a group of leading geneticists agreed at a meeting here. The need for more computers of more sophisticated types was a recurrent theme in the discussions. Research in human genetics has expanded rapidly in recent years. About 500 different diseases based largely on hereditary factors have been discovered.

Even among healthy normal persons, human chemistry is proving more diverse than had been thought. MANY specialists agree that the major impact of genetics on human health and well being remains in the future. Yet the scientific data is becoming so massive, and some of the problems so complex, that experts see computers, large-scale research facilities and central registries for information as vital to continued progress. Specialists in the use of genetics in medical diagnosis and counseling were described as being overwhelmed by a mass of information on newly recognized diseases so tremendous that it is rapidly becoming impossible for any one person to master it. MANY PROBLEMS in the genetics of human populations AMONG OTHER points emphasized was th need to study the world's few remaining primitive populations while they still remain unchanged by the encroachments cf One specialist said scientists may have only 20 more years 0yW-A Special prices in effect Sunday, Sept.
