Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Tuesday, August 17, 1954 $80,000 Improves Adventist's Thunderbird Academy Miami Area Disaster Aid Now Available Dennis The Menace By Hank Ketcham PRESCOTT Arizona Seventh-day Adventists yesterday were told that $80,000 had been spent during the summer improving the church's vocational high school, Thunderbird Academy. Ray O. Stone, principal of the academy located at the former Airfield 11 near Phoenix, reported on the school's progress at the week-long camp meeting on the Iron Springs Road near Prescott. He said more than 150 students are expected to enroll this fall, the second year of the school's operation.

Professor Stone said that a furniture building shop, a laundry, and dry cleaning plant will begin operation as soon as school starts. He said these services have been established to enable financially limited students to earn part of their school expenses while learning a trade. include dormitory space for 100 students, seven new classrooms, and living quarters for faculty. He also announced that the academy will provide advance study for graduates from the denomination's 10-grade Indian mission school at Holbrook. Classes in auto mechanics, woodworking, general shop, drafting, baking, and home economics have been added to the standard academic curriculum, he said.

Improvements at the academy Miami, swept July 20 by the worst storm flood in 25 years, has been designated a disaster area and subject to aid by the U. S. Small Business Administration. Announcement of the inclusion of Miami with Globe, struck by a storm flood tide July 29, was made yesterday by Gordon W. Boudreau, Arizona manager of SBA.

Globe's flood damage has been estimated at more than $l'2 million. Miami's damage was placed at $500,000. Bbudreau said that applications for disaster loans by Miami business men and home owners could be filed with him today in Globe, or at any subsequent time at SBA's state offices in the Ellis Building here. SBA operates an office at the Arizona State Employment Service in Globe each Tuesday. Boudreau said survey or Globe's storm damage was nearly completed, but that the survey of Miami damage is yet to be made.
