Telephone Outages Due Twice yearly, the sun, the earth and Alascom's satellite handling much of Alaska's long-distance telephone communications align along, a straight path, said an Alascom press release. During these times each of the 200 satellite earth stations are unavoidably pointed at the sun which is positioned directly behind the orbiting satellite.

Radio interference from the sun creates conditions unfavorable to satel- lite communicatons during these brief periods. The next period of sun outages will occur from Saturday through Wednesday. Some remote small earth stations -may be.subject to a to five minute outages shortly after 1 p.m. during that five-day period. Any caller disconnected during the outage period should immediately contact a long distance operator for credit on the call.

The Alaska Region of the Forest Service, containing the two largest national forests, Tongass and Chu- gach, has installed a crime-line telephone number to assist the agency's law enforcement officers in investigating suspected violations. The public is encouraged to report suspected criminal activity on public lands. The crime-line number, 5868829, will connect a caller with a Forest Service law enforcement office in Juneau, where a recorded message will explain how to report suspected criminal violations, fiscal irregularites or official misconduct. A caller may remain anonymous or leave a name and telephone number for an agent to return the call. AH calls are confidential and rewards may be paid for information lending to the arrest and conviction of persons committing certain crimes on forest lands.
