They will have tfte same opportunities for advancement, the same opportunity for commission, and something eCtirely new in the military annals of the nation they will be educated for their tasks in co-educa-tfonal classes right along with iqale personnel.

THE COMMAND of Colonel Geraldine T. May, the recruiting of women for the air fijrce begins with applications to afiy recruiting station by the prospective enlistee. She must submit tflree letters of recommendation atid will be interviewed by a male ar force officer and a woman officer. She will be given the preliminary test and a physical examination. Her file will be sent to the district recruiting office and, provided she is accepted, she will then bf assigned to Lackland air force base in San Antonio, Texas for basic training.

I "She will be a member of the air force," Colonel May said. "She is to be no different on the records than a male member of the organization. There will be no woman's corps in the air force. WAF is just a nickname for personnel differentiation. It has no military or official significance.

"AFTER SHE HAS completed hpr basic training, the WAF will tben be subject to classification. If sfte is especialy adapted to any particular service, she probably will be assigned there. Women will be used competitively with men for photographic work, radio work, communications, administr ative work and clerical jobs. They will have opportunities to serve in all of the manifold administrative functions of the air force on exactly the same basis as men-. Relatively few secretarial jobs are included.

"We do not expect to use women as operating personnel, that is as mechanics, vehicle drivers or flying personnel. "We do expect to be very selective and to impose the requirements rigidly," Colonel May said. She said also that about 100 of the applicants who sign after September 15 will be sent to Lackland for the first of trainees, beginning October 15. of their1 1 15 1 depend upon the results $7,175 To $7,650 I Veterans Loans City Utilities F.H.A. Colonel May said she could not tell how many of the first enlistees would qualify for the officers can- didate school, but said there was a shortage of WAF officers in the air force now. CURRENT AUTHORIZATIONS by congress, she said, permit the enlistment of a total of 4,000 vom- en. There are an approximate 1,800 in service now. Colonel May pointed to this as an evidence that for a short time at least many of the new recruits! would gain rates and ranks as the WAF expands.

Ultimately, two per cent of the air force will be WAFs, she said. Colonel May said that all girls who complete the basic training course at Lackland will be rated as Pfcs. They are to be assigned to air force bases on the continent "with a few to be assigned over-j seas on selected jobs. "A PFC IN THE air force," Col- onel May said, "has a job which in terms of actual earning plus al- lowances and opportunities, is the equivalent of a civilian job paying $3,587 a year. This is with a due allowance for the fact that a Pfc gets quarters, food and I the right to buy all personal re- quirements through post" ex- changes.
