cer Mortuary, 1541 g. Thomas. (ANDY TO ASK ANDY Andy sends a 15-volume set of Compton's Pictured Encyclopedia to Mary Gerstenberger, 12, of Phoenix, for her question: What are diatoms? It seems there is no limit to the number of diatoms in the world. Some 10,000 different varities have been classified. They thrive in both fresh and salt water.

They teem in the oceans and every river, pond, and stagnant pool has its quota. Diatoms come in a variety of sizes and countless shapes. The giants are just big enough for our eyes to see as tiny dots. The smaller ones measure about one thousand to an inch. To see the variety of shapes, you need a microscope.

Actually, the diatoms are members of the plant world, microscopic cousins of the brown algae seaweeds. Diatoms have been on earth for millions and millions of years and they play an important role in the world of nature. Dozens of different varieties may show up in a single drop of pond water. Some are triangles, some are globes. Each looks like a miracle of the glass blower's art done by a midget pixie.

This is not surprising, for the tiny plants live in shells made of silica, the same element we use to make glass. No matter what its basic shape, each diatom shell is in two equal halves joined together with a slender seam. Tiny spikes, hollows, grooves, globes, and buttons are used to ornament the outside of the shells in neat designs. Each little diatom lives inside one of these fancy glass houses. The little diatom jewels live on sunshine, carbon dioxide, and chemicals from the water.

They are food for fish and other water-dwelling animals. The plankton on which the big whales feed is mostly diatoms. Hence the biggest animal in the world is fed by some of the smallest of the plants. And the diatoms pour oxygen into the water for the fish to breathe, just as the land plants pour oxygen in the air for us to breathe. Send questions to Ask Andy, The Arizona Republic Davenport, Iowa, three grandand seven great-grand- Mary Eagle Mrs.

"My wife is sick from fear," Wing Backed For Hospital A $76.000 grant of federal funds to help finance construction of a new addition to the Arizona Crippled Children's Convalescent Hospital here, was approved yesIterday by the state's advisory hospital survey and construction council. The council action is subject to concurrence by the U.S.

Public Health Service, which generally backs its recommendations. The new hospital wing would provide surgery facilities, which the hospital does not now have, as well as out-patient facilities. The federal grant is to be matched equally by the state through funds appropriated by the legislature. The council deferred until July 31, action on the following grant applications: Gila County General Hospital, $100,000 for a 34-bed nursing home addition; joint application of Tucson Medical Center and St. Mary's Hospital for $500,000 in federal funds for additions to both institutions; St.

Joseph's Hospital, Nogales, $428,000 for a new hospital plant; Cochise County Hospital, Dougias, $9,000 for equipment for its new 30-bed gerliatrics wing.
