Page 8, Daily Sitka Sentinel, Sitka, Alaska, Friday, August 29,1986 Sentinel Blue Jays Inch Closer to Red Sox 3 Coach: Line is Key Against Seahawks SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --Coach Bill Walsh hopes to see some solid blocking by his offensive line when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Seattle Seahawks tonight in the final tuneup game before the regular NFL season. The 49ers lost to the Denver Broncos 14-9 last weekend in what Walsh called "the poorest offensive game we've had since I've been with the 49ers." The coach felt that poor blocking resulted in several quarterback sacks and made it virtually impossible for the running backs, particularly newcomer Joe Cribbs, to break loose. Cribbs ran the ball twice, gaining two yards and losing three, in his first appearance since being acquired from the Buffalo Bills. He is listed as the 49ers' second halfback, behind Wendell Tyler, but could very well be in the starting backfield alongside fullback Roger Craig on Sept. 7 in the season opener at Tampa Bay.

Tyler and quarterback Joe Montana are among the players questionable, because of injuries, for the season opener. Tyler intends to play tonight, testing a knee which has troubled him since last season, but the 49ers' quarterbacking will be handled by Jeff Kemp and Mike Moroski. Montana is scheduled to wait until practice on Sunday to try running on the ankle he sprained three weeks ago. "If I could just get in a full week's practice I wouldn't feel quite as bad," says Montana, wondering how sharp he'll be a week from Sunday. Seattle's No.

1 quarterback, Dave Krieg, is sound physically. But Gale Gilbert, the former California star, is out with a injury and the backup quarterback job now belongs to rookie Sean Salisbury from Southern Cal. Salisbury's pre-season numbers, including 310 yards and four touchdown passes, are better than Krieg's. but the rookie says, "I know I'm not ready to start yet." Seattle will open the regular season at home against the i Steelers. Krieg got off to a strong start in the 1985 NFL season, totaling 543 yards and eight TDs passing in victories over Cincinnati and San Diego, but had several bad games during Seattle's 8-8 season.

New starters for Seattle include former USFL player Gordon Hudson at tight end and rookie John Williams from Florida at fullback. Cleveland Wins In Battle Of Brothers By BILL BARNARD AP Sports Writer The Toronto Blue Jays, in last place as late as June 1, could be emerging as the top challenger to Boston's lead in the American League East. "I think people were counting us out in the early part of the season, saying that Boston would run away with it," Toronto right-hander Jim Clancy said after pitching the Blue Jays to their fifth straight victory, a 9-1 decision over Cleveland Thursday night. "I think this is it, that we're going to get on that roll. It's the greatest time of the season to do it.

Everybody's at their peak now," said Clancy, whose complete-game nine-hitter gave him eight victories in his last 10 decisions. The second-place Blue Jays are now 4 1-2 games behind the Red Sox, who were idle Thursday. In other AL games. Minnesota beat Milwaukee 6-2; Oakland swept a doubleheader from Baltimore, 5-4 and 8-7; Chicago downed Texas 6-2; New York edged Seattle 4-2; and California defeated Detroit 4-2. Clancy.

14-7, did not walk a batter and allowed the Indians their only run on Andre Thornton's 17th homer in the sixth inning. Meanwhile, he was backed by a 16-hit attack, including four each by George Bell and Tony Fernandez and three by Rick Leach. Ken Schrom. 11-6. was the loser, yielding five runs on 10 hits in four innings.

"We got no pitching and we got no hitting. That's what it boils down to." Indians Manager Pat Corrales said. Angels 4, Tigers 2 California hiked its West Division lead over Texas to 4 1-2 games as Don Sutton won his 307th game and Dick Schofield shook off a beaning to knock in the tie-breaking run against Detroit in the sixth inning. In the second, a pitch from Tigers' rookie Eric King grazed Schofield's face, but after lying motionless for several minutes, he stayed in the game. With the score tied 1-1 in the sixth.

Schofield put the Angels ahead to stay with an RBI single. "I just had a little headache, but I've had them before," Schofield said. White Sox 6, Rangers 2 Chicago beat Texas for the first time in 10 tries this season as Steve Carlton won his 321st game. Carlton, who is now 2-2 in the AL after playing for Philadelphia and San Francisco in the National League, gave up six hits, walked four and struck out four in 6 1-3 innings. Texas' only runs scored in the seventh on RBI singles by Steve Buechele and Ruben Sierra.

A's 5, Orioles 4 A's 8, Orioles 7 Baltimore relief ace Don Aase, bidding to become the major-league leader in saves, gave up two-run hits with two outs in the ninth inning in both games as Oakland swept the Orioles. Carney Lansford's two-run triple into the right-field corner with two outs won the nightcap after Dave Kingman's 30th homer settled the opener. Yankees 4, Mariners 2 Rickey Henderson was ill before the game, but led off the first inning with a homer for the seventh time this season and New York went on to break a four- game losing streak by beating Seattle. Dan Pasqua also homered in the first inning after Henderson broke an G-for- 17 slump with his 22nd homer, off Mike Morgan. 9-14.

His seventh leadoff homer tied his own AL record. Mickey Brantley hit a two-run homer off Rasmussen in the third to account for the Mariners' only runs. Twins 6, Brewers 2 Gary Gaetti went 4-for-4. with his 27th home run and three singles, and drove in four runs as Minnesota beat Milwaukee. Bert Blyleven.

14-10, benefitted from the Twins" four-run fourth inning and went on to post his 12th complete game. The Brewers rallied in the bottom of the fourth with Ben Oglivie's fourth homer and an RBI single by Charlie Moore, but they couldn't score again as Blyleven pitched hitless ball over the last four innings. Younger brother Matt and the Browns came out on top, but not because Chris did anything wrong. Matt, the Cleveland place-kicker, booted six field goals without a miss Thursday night, including a 34-yarder with five seconds remaining which-, gave the Browns a 25-22 victory over" the Raiders. Meanwhile, Chris, the Raiders' kicker, connected on all three of his field goal attempts. In all, the two accounted for 29 of the 47 points scored at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

The two spent some time afterwards talking in the Los Angeles dressing room. When asked about playing against his brother. Matt said with a smile, "We were never playing on the field at the same As far as doing his job, Matt said, "That was the most field goals I've ever kicked in a game. You just don't usually get that many chances. It doesn't Matt was referring to the fact that the game was a pre-season affair.

New York ended its preseason on a winning note, as Bobby Humphrey scored on an 88-yard kick off return. The Jets fell behind in the first period when Ron Jaworski scored on a one- yard quarterback sneak, but they went ahead 7-6 when Humphrey returned the kickoff for a touchdown. Philadelphia took a 13-7 lead on a 53- yard touchdown run by rookie Junior Tautalatasi, but O'Brien's scoring pass to Toon put the Jets ahead for good at 14-13. After two Leahy field goals and the first Ryan-to-Hector scoring pass, the Eagles made it 27-20 in the final period with a six-play, 74-yard drive capped by quarterback Randall Cunningham's 9- yard pass to Tautalatasi.

"Anybody" this time was Robert Seguso, whom the top-seed at the U.S. Open routed 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. The defending champion rarely was tested by the sore-kneed Seguso. He's hardly ever tested by anyone these days. The hard-hitting Czechoslovakian has won the French Open among his seven tournament victories this year.

He lost to Boris Becker in the Wimbledon finals, his first solid showing on grass. He is a heavy favorite here with a 57-4 record this year. "You never can be sure if you'll play your best." he added. "If it's my best to the point I imagine it, nobody can touch me. "But the same is true with Boris and Dther players.

A perfect match would be to win 6-0, not lose any points and hit all winners. But that is not going Lo happen." Lendl doesn't need to be perfect. He's practically unbeatable right now, despite his few faults. Just ask Seguso. "With most guys, there is a weakness you can work on, but he does everything kvell," said Seguso, who may need surgery on his left knee.

"He's definitely the best, he's winning The Browns, who trailed 22-9 at halftime. forged a 22-22 tie in the fourth quarter on field goals of 39 and 29 yards by Matt Bahr. who also had field goals of 44, 48 and 46 yards in the first half.
