We were in awe of the glaciers, wildlife and towns we had visited, but we knew that we had missed most of what Alaska has to offer because of the limited time we had ashore. That will change the next time we take a cruise to Alaska. Several tour organizers and cruise lines are combining cruises with extended land tours by RV, bicycle, rail and even small plane. Among the new ways to see Alaska by sea and land: Alaska Highway Cruises (1-800-323-5757) offers packages that combine three- to seven-day cruises on a Holland America ship with seven- and 14-night land explorations via RV.

Besides a conventional Classics subscription series, the orchestra offers Symphony Sundays; Family Series; Encounter Series (an opportunity for singles to meet and enjoy a "social event with good music, a series that is virtually sold out for the season); and Sundays in Escondido, four Sunday-afternoon concerts at the new California Arts Center in Escondido, 35 easy interstate miles north of downtown San Diego.
