We were in awe of the glaciers, wildlife and towns we had visited, but we knew that we had missed most of what Alaska has to offer because of the limited time we had ashore. That will change the next time we take a cruise to Alaska. Several tour organizers and cruise lines are combining cruises with extended land tours by RV, bicycle, rail and even small plane. Among the new ways to see Alaska by sea and land: Alaska Highway Cruises (1-800-323-5757) offers packages that combine three- to seven-day cruises on a Holland America ship with seven- and 14-night land explorations via RV.

For example, one package features a three- or four-night cruise on the SUPER CRUISE SALE! LOWEST PRICES AND SPECIAL BOOKINC BONUS CRUISES Meet the Celebrity Rep. "Families, avid cyclists and beginners are encouraged to participate." The 14-day "Bike and Cruise Alaska" trips begin July 2, 16 and 30.

Prices start at $2,945 per person, double occupancy. Alaska's Glacier Bay Tours and Cruises (1-800-451-5952) has numerous landsea packages. The "Big Ship Inside Passage Cruise Tour" offers a four-day cruise on a Holland America ship from Vancouver to Juneau; two nights and sightseeing tours in Juneau; a flight to Glacier Bay; train trips to Denali and Anchorage. Fares start at $2,995 per person, double occupancy, and include airfares between Juneau and Fairbanks and Anchorage and Seattle. An optional two-day trip to the Arctic world's greatest musicians not only in La Jolla, the fashionable beach community a few miles north of San Diego, but also a Celebrity series in San Diego's Civic Theatre.

Performances in La Jolla consist of a chamber-music winter series, called Sherwood at Parker; a six-concert Discovery Series; and the organization's signature series, the La Jolla Chamber Music Festival known as SummerFest. The latter comprises 2XA weeks of chamber concerts at La Jolla's Parker Auditorium, located near the center of La Jolla at 750 Nautilus Street. This year, the Celebrity series lineup at the Civic Theatre has included master performers such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Midori, pianist Peter Serkin and conductorpianist Andre Previn.
