Funeral Rites for Jazz Arranger Feature His Own Compositions NEW YORK (AP) Tadd Dameron went to his grave yesterday to the lingering echo of a jazz quintet, which beat out spirited rhythm beside his bier in a high-vaulted Lutheran Church on Upper Broadway. It was the way the 48-year-old Negro composer, arranger, and pianist had asked to go a unique funeral for a unique musician. Dameron died Tuesday of cancer after a long illness. One of his last requests what that his friend, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, get together a group and play some of Dameron's own jazz works at his funeral. ABOUT 100 mourners, half of them white, assembled in the Advent Lutheran Church at 93rd Street and Broadway, where the pastor, the Rev.

John Gensel, opened the services with a scriptural reading. The body lay in a wood casket, between banks of flowers at the entrance to the altar. 35 13-Auctions WARE'S AUCTION SALES EVERY MONDAY 3811 W. SCH. a.m.

Published: March 11, 12, 18, 49, 1965. Friends of Dameron eulogies, and then Billy Taylor, jazz critic and pianist, played a solo selection on an ivory white piano donated to the church for the occasion by Duke Ellington. When Taylor finished, Golson's group took a position behind and to the left of the bier. At his signal, the quintet swung into one of Dameron's best known composition, "Ladybird." They followed with "If You Could See Me No," and "Squirrel." THE quintet, besides Golson, included trumpeter Johnny Cole, drummer Mel Lewis, pianist Cedar Walton, and bass fiddler Reggie Warsman.

Lewis is white, the others Negro. The notes of the progressive jaz. selections filled the church. There was no audience applause when the 15-minute recital ended. The pastor closed the services with a few more words, then led the congregation in prayer.

In the audience were Dam- eron's mother, Ruth, his brother, Caesar, and his Englishborn second wife, Mia, 38, whom Dameron met in a hospital and married 13 months ago. She is white. DAMERON came out of Cleveland, Ohio, where he was a self-taught jazz pianist in local night clubs. In New York, he became music arranger for such stars as Ellington, Sarch Vaughn, Stan Kenton and George Shearing. He also became a writer of progressive jazz compositions.

I Dameron's last public appearance was last November in Greenwich Village night club. As Dameron's body was borne away to Ferncliff Cemetery in Westchester County after the funeral services, Taylor declared: "Dameron was a musician of undeniable talent who never achieved the proper recognition. The music played this afternoon is his legacy to the world." pi for be ice 1 NE.
