There we were on Barbados, an island graced on one side with miles of gentle Caribbean coastline and genteel restaurants and resorts, all facing a western sky that turned the colors of papaya and passion fruit every evening at dusk. In short, everything you could want in a beach vacation, all gathered in one place. And we, perversely, had chosen to stay on the other side. That was the Atlantic side the side where the harsh cliffside views were breathtaking, the harsh winds were bracing and the harsh surf never stopped crashing in giant sprays large enough to knock you down beautiful, but dangerous. So it was a good thing that the towels at our hotel the legendary, though lapsed, Crane Beach were the same color as the ones at the Royal Pavilion hotel, across the island on Barbados' luxurious sunset strip.

When we strategically slung them over our shoulders to fool the staff and stepped onto the Royal Pavilion sand, they became our entree into' two worlds at once the splendid isolation of our own side of the island, and the elegant teatime tranquillity of the other. It became our routine: mornings on our brick terrace on the Crane Beach bluff, wrestling the winds for our breakfast; middays driving all over the island among touristy attractions and less-traveled local roads; afternoons drinking up complimentary rum punches; and sunsets at poolside bars where we didn't, uh, technically belong. If it sounds a little complicated, it was. But in Barbados, you have to manufacture your own challenges. Otherwise, everything would be just too easy.

This coral, pink-sand island isn't for rock climbers or volcano plungers or hardy rain-forest pathfinders. It's a former British colony where you can start your day with a historic mansion tour, proceed to a dog show, go antiques shopping and catch a polo match before tea and then take in a symphony concert before retiring for the night. It's a Caribbean Disneyland where you can ride a trolley through limestone caverns, board a tiny submarine to view coral reefs or take a day sail on something called the Jolly Roger, complete with pirate flag. It's an island off Venezuela where you can get fine Italian food at Luigi's and decent fried chicken at, well, Kentucky Fried Chicken. You know you're not exactly roughing it when someone slips a Chinese takeout menu under the windshield wiper of your parked car.

But we tried, It was the Crane Beach hotel's apparent luxury rather than its ruggedness that attracted us its cliff-top pool, embellished with Roman columns, was the setting for surreal perfume commercials; its beach was labeled by several guidebooks as among the most beautiful anywhere in the Caribbean. We got more ruggedness than we bargained for, however, along with the beauty. The hotel clearly had seen better days. One of its two staircases down to the beach had collapsed, and the other left beachgoers picking their way across slippery rocks to get over the churning water to the sand. The beach itself was gorgeous, and the water was amazing to watch it was as if the cove had collected all of the colors the ocean could be and kept mixing them in, one after another.

But swimming in the crashing waves was only for the very strong. A large saltwater pool was a better antidote, though its floor needed cleaning.
