I wonder why this guy is being so vague about this "something" he purchased, but I guess if he doesn't want to tell us, that's his business. Anyway, this is an excellent question about something I always wondered about myself but never got around to checking out. I bet I've had at least a dozen different addresses since I graduated from college, and I've never once notified my alma mater about them, but I don't think I've ever missed a copy of the alumni magazine. I even get mail from my high school alumni group and high school was a looong time ago.

That's kind of creepy, don't you think? OK, here's how it works. When you moved, you didn't tell your college about it or the manufacturer of that "something," but you did tell someone. Unless you just stuffed a few things in a suitcase and slipped out the back window after dark and hitchhiked down to the bus station. Chances are you filled out a change-of -address card at the post office and sent your new address to the utilities and your bank and so on and so forth. Well, the U.S.

Postal Service doesn't just tack your change-of -address card up on the wall in the back room for a couple of months. They send it to the National Change of Address system, which was set up several years ago to try to cut the amount of undeliverable mail they had to deal with. How this works gets a little complicated, and I am not quite sure I understand it. Apparently, this National Change of Address service is provided by private sector companies that the Postal Service certifies and licenses. So the Postal Service gives your new address to the licensees, and they put it all in a big computer with about 152 million other changes of address and hang on to it for four years.

So big mass mailers or alumni magazines or "something" manufacturers can check the list and track you down. That's good for them, I suppose, but it's still kind of creepy if you ask me. The bus was near the top of the Sunshine Skyway bridge Wednesday afternoon when Thomas Grove, 61, fell out of his seat.
