Page 8 A Finley Takes First Step Toward Move KANSAS CITY (AP)-Charles 0. Finley is on record with his first official move toward getting permission of other American League club owners to move his Kansas City Athletics baseball franchise to another city. Finely notified city manager Carleton Sharpe by telegram Thursday night that' "it is our present intention not to exercise our option to renew the lease on Municipal Stadium." Finley and Joe Cronin, American League president, both denied reports earlier this week that Finley already had asked Cronin to call a meeting of owners next month so that Finley could ask permission to move. The Kansas City Star said it had learned that Finley "actually djd make the request." In any case, the telegram has the same effect. Seattle and Oakland have frequently been mentioned as sites.

Lind thinks that one reason her husband will never forget that date is that was the evening he caught the "big fish." Mr. Lind and Harold Walker of DeSoto were fishing for catfish in the Lebo City Lake, using "tomato" worms for bait when Mr. Lind snagged the big one. It took the two men 30 minutes to land him. The big yellow cat was still alive when they reached home and the family bathtub was the only utensil large enough to hold him.

He was 40 inches long, 11 inches across the head and weighed 30 pounds, the largest fish ever taken from the lake. Mr. Lind's luck was still holding when he went fishing the next day in the Neosho River and caught a five-pound cat but Mrs. Lind tells that when she tried the lake that evening she only got a few small bullheads. UCLA-Tennessee Tops Slate Several Teams in Top Ten Make Debut This Weekend By the Associated Press UCLA and its celebrated quarterback, Gary Beban, rule an uneasy four-point favorite over rebounding Tennessee Saturday in the Los Angeles game that highlights college football's first busy weekend.

Texas is a 10-point choice over Southern Methodist in the nationally televised feature at College Station, and both Southern California and Colorado are favored in contests involving teams expected to finish among the Top Ten in the country. Southern Cal, seventh in the preseason poli of The Associated Press, is a six-point choice over Washington State in a Friday night game in Los Angeles, and Colorado, rated 10th, is rated nine points over Baylor at Boulder, Colo. UCLA, with a 9-1 record last year, and Tennessee, 7-3 and winner over Syracuse in the Gator Bowl, are also rated among the year's picked eighth by a panel of experts and the Volunteers ninth. The West Coast battle should produce one of tne liveliest quarterback duels of the year. Beban, a scrambling signal- caller who runs as well as he passes and who is advance favorite for Heisman Trophy honors, completed 156 of 309 passes during his first two seasons for 2.728 yards and ran for an additional 1,042 yards.

He has scored 148 points. Tennessee's antidote to Beban is a snapshooting passer named Dewey Warren, who specialized in the bomb. On a team that has traditionally stayed on the ground, Warren completed 136 of 229 passes last season for 1,716 yards. His main target was a sure-fingered speedster named Richmond Flowers, who is back. Southern California has come up again with a powerhouse team featuring a 220- pound fullback named Mike Hull; a flanker named Jira Lawrence, who can do the 100 in 9.6 seconds; 0.

J. Simpson, another nine-second man, and linemen who can move a house. In the television game ABC- TV, 4 p.m. (EOT), the Texas Ag- gies will present the strongest threat to the conference title since Paul "Bear" Bryant left to go to Alabama. The Aggies hav a good quarterback in Edd Hargett and excellent receivers in Tommy Maxwell and Tommy Buckman.

SMU has been hit hard by graduation. In other leading games, the Washington Huskies are a slight favorite over hefty Nebraska at Seattle, Oregon State is conceded a small edge over Stanford at Portland, Duke is favored over Wake Forest at Raleigh, N.C.: Oklahoma State rates a touchdown over the Air Force Academy at Stillwater, North Carolina State is picked to beat North Carolina and California favored over Oregon at Berkeley, Calif. i-7 ALLEN Miss Becky Wilins returned recently from a vacation trip to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sweldson and family at Le Calif.

there, she visited Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm and other places of interest. The trip was made by plane. Miss Wilkins is a student in the Northern Heights High School. Teams Still Optimistic About Season Friday, SeptemJSer 15, 1987 Two Twin Valley League teams that do not have enough players for a scrimmage are not letting the shortage of people dampen their football hopes. At LeRoy, where the squad numbers 16, coach David McDonald says "We'll win our and Jack Rutledge, coach of the 20-man LeRoy squad goes a step farther and states "I think we can have a winning season if nobody gets hurt." LeRoy broke even last year, with a 4-4-1 record, while Gridley won just once, and tied one more, in nine starts. Coach Rutledge said that his team, which includes eight lettermen, would be of average size and a little above average speed.
