club and music circles ot Phoenix have entered the new year with much en- husiasm. The close of the old year revealed much' progress in the artistic realm of Phoenix, and the coming year promises to surpass any year In the history of -such organisations. The formal opening of the Arizona Museum last month marked one of the greatest strides on the program of worthwhile and con- centrated efforts. It was through the untiring ef-t forts of Mrs. Emery Oidaker that the Museum became a cherished reality.

Many interesting musical events are being anticipated by lovers of music and one of the outstanding events this month will be the ap pearance of Madame Schumann Keink, who Is expected In Phoenix the latter part of January. The lecture on "Art and Life In Spain," which will be delivered by Dudley Crafts Watson, January 0 at the Woman's Club, sponsored by the Fhoenix Fine Arts Association, will be of special Interest to mem-; bers of art circles. The rapid growth! of the Fine Arts association during the past year represents one of, the splendid moves toward cultural i development in the city of Phoenix. This association is the result or materialisation of an idea created by a committee of members of the Phoenix Woman's Club and is fill- ing a long felt need in art circles because of the vision it represents. The fact that the lecture to be glv-- en next Friday is free is the secret of the phenomenal success of the organization since it is the desire of the members to give some worth while program free to the public whereby they hope to increase interest in the field of artists.

Regardless of -the serious under- I takings of social and club leaders, there are always charming parties to enliven the days and evenings. One of the interesting events of V' the last week was the dinner daace given Thursday evening at the Arl- zona Club by Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Burrall when they entertained In honor of Mrs.

Bun-all's sister, Mrs. Henry Clay Lynn, formerly Dorothy Dix Howard, and Mr. Lynn, who recently returned from their wed-' ding trip in California. Pink and orchid formed the charming color motif, suggestive of '-the Spring season and was cleverly developed by the hostess in the use of pink and orchid sweet peas, as central decorations for the tables, There were a number of placed for bridge so the place-cards were in the form of valentine tallys. Madame frequently sings with the Aliolio Club of Chicago and has appeared with the Chicago Symphony orchestra and the Minneapolis. Symphony orchestra which represent two of the most notable orchestras in the country. Madame Zendt was born in Snia- land Yislanda, Sweden, of Danish txiraction but came to this country when only three years of age.

She received her musical educa tion in America under Karlton Hackett of Chicago and Herbert Witherspoon of York City. She has completed several transcontinental tours and when asked for her opinion on the most appreciative audience or section of country represented, she replied that the people on the West coast are extremely appreciative and eager for the best music. She also stated that she visited the West coast several time and that each visit convinced her that gieat progress is being made in music tdrcles as he always found unusual advancement during each period between her visits. Zendt also talks most enthusiastically of the better music in Alaska. She stated that she was astonished at the Interest taken in things musical there.

She told of a group of Indians playing a record of Caruso singing "Pagliacci' while they cooked their fish on the shore, the setting itself being somewhat fascinating. American audiences enjoy most pongs with a melody, according to Madame Zendt.
