Dec. 25.

(AP) Brazil has made France a greatly appreciated Christmas present by offering to pay coupons on four loans in gold. The ministry of finances today issued the following note: "The Brazilian embassy has just informed the ministry of foreign affairs that all necessary measures have been taken for the payment in gold of the coupons on the 4 per cent Brazilian loan of 1911, due January 1, 1930. "The Brazilian government will also pay in gold all coupons due on three loans that The Hague Tribunal recently ruled on, namely those of 1909, 1910 and 1911." ATHENS BIRDS' FATE PUZZLES Whether the birds which disappeared from Athens, Greece, during the epidemic of dengue fever, will return, is puzzling Greek zoologists. One theory is that the feathered songsters, which filled the gardens of the city, were attacked by the fever and flew away to die, another is that their instinct caused them to seek refuge elsewhere. Excitement was high among the young children as Santa Claus appeared on the roof of the Plaza hotel and descended to the platform where' the tree was erected, to pass out a bag of candy to every child. The holiday festivities will continue through the week, the Christmas cantata to be presented on next Monday evening at the high school.

N. Dec. 25. (A P) Shot by coast guardsmen whilt cruising in a small boat in the Niagara river here tonight, Eugene Downey, 27, son of Police Lieut. Eugene F.

Downey, died fti a hospital less than an hour later. Downey was crossing the Niagara river in a motor craft. Authorities said he failed to stop in answer to a command from the coast guardsmen, who then opened fire with a machine gun. No liquor nor narcotics were found in the boat. Downey was accompanied by a young man who was at the wheel when the coast guardsmen opened fire.

After Downey was wounded the other occupant of the boat put on full speed, ran his craft into shore and escaped before the government men were able to land. His identity was not learned. Downey died of a. bullet wound in the ab domen. The boat, customs officials say, answered the description of one which has been running rum end narcotic drugs from the Canadian shore to Buffalo and vicinity.

They had been notified by Ontario officials, they said, that the surreptitious traffic of narcotics between Canada and the United States re cently had grown to extensive proportions. Downey was released only last week in bail of $1,000 after he had been arrested by special agents of the coast guard intelligence unit on a smuggling conspiracy charge. He was one of nine arrested in connection with the alleged smuggling activities of the barge Loretta, which, it is charged by the government, brought 1,000 cases of liquor to Buffalo from Port Colborne, last October. EYELASHES TELL HEALTH Instead of being a mark of beauty, long eyelashes are an indication, in many cases, of ill health. Thus declares a physician of Japan after a two-year study of the subject.

He found that most children in poor health have long eyelashes, and that those of consumptive children grow twice as long as those of tots that are in good health. He adds that eyelashes of normal children advance about an eighth of an inch the first year of life, while those of scrofula sufferers become about twice as long. TO ARIZONA BILTMORE LEAVE 27 S. Jones. 61-year-old physician, his wife, Mrs. Lucy Lane Jones. 32, and her nephew George Lane, 13, mystified different officials investigating the killings since discovery of the three bodies this morning. All had been beaten to death.

A coroner's jury this afternoon re-1 turned a verdict of murder by some unknown person with robbery as a motive. Sheriff Walker Anderson and his son. Deputy Sheriff Anderson, however, expressed belief that the slayings had followed an attack on Mrs. Jones, and announced that they were seeking a young negro named Sam. who had been employed in the household for the past week.

Sam, the sheriff said, made his home in the basement, where Mrs. Jones' stripped body was found with that of her young nephew near by. He also said the door of her bedroom had been broken open and her bed in a state of extreme disorder. The body of Dr. Jones, who was one of the most prominent physician in Knoxville, was found on the floor of a garage.

A bloodstained axe and a pair of hedge clippers, also blood-stained, were found near by.
