Northern Suite 1705 Peoria, AZ 85345 WEST VALLEY LIVING Z2 MIDWEEK MARCH 17, 2010 Lis Doon Varna is real-deal Irish pub, eatery in Peoria By Nikki Buchanan SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC "No shamrocks here" boast the owners of this real-deal Irish pub and restaurant, designed in the Emerald Isle and shipped piece by piece to Arizona.

Like Rula Bula, its sister restaurant in Tempe, Lis Doon Varna is an official Guinness Irish pub concept, which is a bit like having the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. It will surely be a fun place to act Irish on St. Patrick's Day. Scene: Named for a famous matchmaking town in Ireland, Lis Doon Varna looks like a supersized thatched-roof cottage from the outside, a charming anomaly plucked from County Clare and nestled just a baseball's throw from the Peoria Sports Complex. The interior, which includes a stone-walled lounge, a lively main dining room (complete with church organ and pulpit) and two smaller rooms that cannily replicate a rustic cottage, is furnished with salvaged wood, old furniture, cooking utensils, farm tools, vintage photos and antiques from Ireland.

The themed sound system offers up everything from the Cranberries to Irish jigs, while the clientele skews a little older than the rowdy Tempe crowd. Food: The says "Irish pub," but the multipage menu says "whatever floats your boat," which means chicken tenders, BBQ bacon burgers, oysters Rockefeller and jumbo pork chops served with Derry apple relish. Pub classics are offered alongside generic dishes. It's doubtful that Irish lads and lasses were weaned on Hot Bollix Spicy Potato Balls, crisp outside and oozy with cheddar and mashed potato at the center Served with ranch dip and Louisiana hot sauce, they're lead-heavy and memorable for their oddity. Of the traditional dishes, fish-andchips ($11.94) is the standout.

Corned beef, slow-roasted in Guinness, comes as thinly sliced as deli meat, accompanied by red potatoes, carrots and bacon-seasoned cabbage What a shame that tender lamb stew ($12.95) and shepherd's pie ($12.95) are marred by herb overkill. Creamy mac-and-cheese is the only under-seasoned dish in the house Doon CARLOS REPUBLIC Lis Doon Varna is in the Arrowhead Fountain Center in Peoria.
