HOLD HEARINGS Four applications for permits to operate service cars in Douglas were heard yesterday by the Corporation Commission and taken under advisement.

The four applicants were Ramon Sanchez. Abram Madrii, Ben Suarez, and Jesus Nevnres. HOME FROM CALIFORNIA Mr. and Mrs. Silas Clark, who have been spending some time on the coast, have returned to their home in Phoenix.

They have been visiting in Southern California since July. FINAL BAND PRACTICE George Hamby, director of the band of Boy Scout Troop 17, announced yesterday that final band practice will be held tonight at 6 o'clock at Tenth and Washington streets. The band is to make its first public appearance in 'concert at East Lake Park Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. TO ENTER TEMPE COLLEGE Miss Eleanor G. Stroud, popular Phoenix Junior college student for the past two years, has returned to Phoenix after an extended tour of Northern and Southern California.

Miss Stroud, who is a member of the Iota Sigma Alpha and Alpha Sigma Gamma sororities, plans to enter Tempe State Teachers college this year to continue her collegiate studies. Walter Laveen, incumbent, apparently had won the democratic nomination for sheriff of Pinal County over State Senator Tom Wills in Tuesday's primaries, on the face of incomplete returns which tonight give him a 'ead of 372 votes. Tabulations of the primary vote made here show complete returns from 10 precincts, incomplete from four, and seven precincts for which no report has been made. Precincts not reporting at a late hour tonight were Eeldman, Mammoth, Copper Creek, Cottonwood, Hayden Junction, Picacheo and Aravapai. Other candidates who apparently had won democratic dominations were: Alva Weaver, for treasurer; Ernest McFarland, for county attorney; Tad Moore, for county assessor; Mrs. Mattie Hall, for county recorder; George Truman, for state senator; and Mrs.

Margaret Randell for county superintendent of schools. There were no candidates for the republican nominations to these offices. Charles Whitlow was given the nomination for constable of Florence, and Cowan for Superior. (UP) -The National Woman's Party announced tonight it had decided at a conference this afternoon to support the Republican presidential ticket because "these are the only ones whose election offers any hope to the movement for equal rights between men and women." "It is not possible to support the Democratic presidential nominee," a resolution said, "because he opposes equal rights for women in industry and has had a long record, during his career as governor, of opposition to equal industrial opportunity for women and has actively sponsored laws handicapping women in earning their livelihood." Kelly of Miami, was an easy winner for one of the places, but another surprise came in the nomination of J. T. Lewis, who was named by a big vote over Mike Murphy, a member of the Colorado river commission. W. T.

Rosen-baum and John McCormiek are the other two nominees for representative. Probably the biggest upset of all, however, was when J. S. Dugan, took the county treasurership away from Laura A. Brookner "VVick, who had been conceded the office for weeks before the primaries by political experts.

Dugan wrested the nomination from Mrs. Wicks by a big vote. J. Alt Edwards was named as the Democratic nominee for sheriff, Dan D. Rienhardt defeated J.

P. Daughterty for county attorney, and Alfred Kinney and John R. Lyons for state senators. E.T. Stewart was unopposed for recorder and G.

Duncan was named assessor. YUMA, Sept. 12. Returns from 24 25 precincts in Yuma county, totaled here tonight, showed that Nellie T. Bush, now serving as state representative, and Hugo B.

Farmer, won the Democratic nominations, unopposed, for state senator, and that Virginia J. Harris and William Wisener were nominated as Democratic candidates for state representative from districts No. 1 and 2. respectively, defeating W. G.

Keiser and A. D. Putnam. Jim Chappell. Democrat, was unopposed for the nomination for sheriff.

He has aerved several terms in that office. In the Republican race for sheriff. J. M. Polha-mus won from Walter S.

WATER BILLS DUE Water service to consumers who have failed to pay their water bills will be cut off unless the accounts are settled within the next two days, according to announcement yesterday by Walter Davis, chief clerk of the department. If wafer is shut off for non-payment an additional charge will be made before service is resumed. HOME FROM VACATION Friedman returned yesterday morning from a three months' outing on the coast. Ho was at Venice most of the time, though he managed to get as far north as San Francisco.

The weather there was cool but it was insufferably hot most of the time in southern California except along the beaches. Wherever he went he found Phoenix to be the chief topic of conversation. END COAST VACATION Mr. -nd Mrs. R.

P. Morton, 1639 Grand avenue, returned to Phoenix yesterday after spending several months vacationing in California. While on the coast. Mr. and Mrs.

Morton spent a great deal of time in visiting the cities of southern California. The Mortons visited friends ana relatives who reside in various coast cities and also spent some time at their summer home. NEW ORGANIZATION TO MEET The initial meeting of the Preschool circle of the Madison Bchool district will be held from 3 to 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The newly organized club is modeled after the Parent-Teachers association except that it is for parents of children who are not yet of school tige. Tomorrow's meet will be held the Madison school auditorium with Mrs.

F. E. Daly as chairman of the day. FRIENDSHIP DAY The annual Friendship day program will be held at Phoenix Union high school today when all upperclass co-eds entertain their "little sisters" or new entering students at a luncheon. Each girl will wear a tag at the school today, the tag bearing her name.

The Friendship day program is a sort of "general mixer." CHURCH MEETING Women of Ihe Central Christian church wiil have an all-day meeting from 10 i. in. to 4 p. m. tomorrow.

The meeting was unusually quiet and routine matters only were disposed of. Several petitions for new paving Jobs were presented to the commission. These petitions requested the paving of Willetta street, from Fifteenth to Sixteenth streets; Culver street, from Fourteenth to Sixteenth streets; Coronado road, between the alley east of Eleventh avenue and ine alley east of Fifteenth avenue; Fifth avenue, from Latham street to McDowell road.
