Si EDiTiQisS 19 The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona. Sunday, December 12, 1954. Of Upper Colorado enaces Coasts Melting Ice Aqiialantes Formed To Boost Proiect SALT LAKE CITY (UP) The "aqualantes" were formed yesterday to campaign for congressional approval of the multi-billion dollar Upper Colorado River storage project Representatives from the Upper Colorado Basin states of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico, concluding a two-day Salt ASKED who "owns" Antarctica, Gould replied, "According to our state department, no one. Our state" department does not recognize anyone's claim." He said that under international law, a territorial claim must be validated by occupation, but that it is not clear Just what that means. Dr.

Gould said Antarctica would never have a strategical importance comparable to that of the Arctic area, because it does not lie on major routes of commerce, and. the fact that 80 per cent of the world population lies north of the equator, "It is isolated, and without means of supporting (human) life," he said. On the other hand, he cited the rapidly growing importance of the Arctic area. "Vigilantes," famed in the days of the old West. MEMBERS of the six-year-old Upper Colorado Compact Commission and the one-day-old Upper Colorado River grass roots committee voted to work together on the campaign. The term "Aqualantes" was coined, Acting Chairman Calvin K. Snyder, Denver, of the committee explained, by substituting the Latin term for water for the fiAt four letters of the word Professional Training Full Tim and Part Time Classes FINE ART COMMERCIAL ART PHOTOGRAPHY CLASSES for WINTER VISITORS and HOBBY STUDENTS CHILDREN'S ART CLASS SAT. 9:30 12:00 A.M. Our guess would be based upon the fact that it is a large continental area and uranium deposits 'have been found on every, other continent. There may be uranium there, but we do not yet Julow for certain." DR.

GOULD said that 31 countries, including Soviet are preparing to participate in the geophysical year. He did not state what countries would work in the Antarctica, but expected there will be 21 observation stations. He said the United States plans to have scientific stations at Little America, the South Pole, in Marie Byrd Land and possibly elsewhere. He said the cruise of the ice breaker Atka, which: left Boston Dec. 1 for Little America, is regarded as fi preview of ice.

Recreation Unit Picks Phoenician PRESCOTT (Special) Henry Swan, Phoenix, was elected president of the Arisona Recreation Association at the group's annual convention which closed here yesterday. THE BADGES, Snyder suggested, would be presented to persons contributing $1 or more to a fund to be used for "educational purposes" in explaining "why the future growth of the area is dependent upon approval of the project." Legislation to authorize some of the vast project's initial phases was introduced in the last session of congress, but failed to pass in the face of organized opposition that Upper Basin states charged was led by California water interests. The Upper Basin storage project is designed to utilize water allocated to Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico from the Colorado River and its tributaries under the Santa Fe compact of 1922. THE ATTACK centered around location of Echo Park Dam, a prime initial construction feature of the project, within confines of Dinosaur National Monument just east of the Colorado-Utah line on the Yampa and Green Rivers. FRANTZ WASHINGTON (UP) The ice caps on the Arctic and Antarctic have been melting since the turn of the century with very great scientific implications, according to Dr. Laurence Gould, noted authority on polar geography.

He indicated that many coastal cities throughout the rid would be submerged in the hypothetical event that the melting continued until the ice is gone. "IF IT continues in the Arctic at the present rate for another 50 years, the Arctic Ocean will be open for navigation," ne saia. "If the ice on Greenland and Antarctica should both be melted, it would raise the sea-level 100 feet. If all ice in Antarctica alone should melt, it would raise the sea-level between 75 and 90 feet" Dr. Gould made these and oth er sensational speculations in an address to the Stanford Club of Washington to illustrate the sci entific importance oi ODserva-tions to be made -during the international geophysical year, 1957-58.

He is president of Carleton College and chairman of the U.S. national committee for the geophysical year. He was 'second in command and chief scientist oi Adm. Richard E. Byrd's expedition to Antarctica in 1928-29, and made a sledge journey on that continent.

expects to return to Amucuia in the geophysical year. DR. GOULD said the Antarctic continent has the highest aver age elevation of any continent, about one mile above sea-level, and is as large as the United States and Mexico combined. He said a recent meeting at Rome preparatory to the geophysical year had -revealed an unexpected and extraordinary interest in Antarctic problems. "The scientists knew that some of the major geophysical problems will never be solved until we have more data from Antarctica," he said.

"Once we have weather stations in Antarctica as well as the Arctic, it will be possible to predict the weather in Washington (meaninz all parts of the world), with an accuracy undreamed of today. "GREAT rushes or surges of air move out from Antarctica how far is not yet known. Each year ice flows from Antarctica into the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in a volume so great that if spread over all the land area of the world it would be one foot thick." Referring tc- observations made during his sledge journey, he said, "There is more coal in Antarctica than in all of the world, but it is totally useless, inaccessible, and of interest only factory trained mechanics 2102 e. And money 'doesn't accumulate very fast when there are cortisone shots to pay for, and doctor bills.

Her husband, Gerald, has spent all he made taking her to a specialist in San Diego, paying hos pital bills there, and paying for special care. The couple came to- Arizona eight months ago, hoping the sun shine would help. Tatum has been working as a land leveler, but was ill for six weeks last summer and has never really regained his health. THE COUPLE just got along, but Mrs. Tatum kept making the earrings and Christmas cards, and saving a little toward the wheelchair.

Someone in Tacna heard of her little savings account and its purpose. A youngster thought maybe money could be raised to-help. An older friend suggested a dinner party, with the proceeds (Do you think we could raise $50?) going toward the project. Then things steamrollered. Practically every person In Tacna helped.

Every store in Yuma County that was contacted donated something. Every woman in Tacna sent pies. Eight donated turkeys were cooked, a ham baked. Perhaps 30 people volunteered to help with the serving, and they were kept busy. MORE THAN 400 persons showed up for the dinner party, although tables were laid for 65.

Somehow, the volunteers managed to serve them. Proceeds from the shindig amounted to more than $500. The people of Tacna added it up, and promptly ordered an electric wheelchair from a California firm. It should be here before Christmas. And Santa Claus? Well, there's the people of Tacna, the Yuma County merchants, the housewives who baked the turkeys and the pies, not to mention the 400 persons who showed up for the party.

Santa Claus? He's hundreds of people. Just ask Mrs. Tatum.
