Horror Film Role Has Her Thinking HOLLYWOOD (UP) Shawn Smith is delighted with her role in a horror film, but she wonders whether the girls in her bridge club in Beverly Hills will understand when they see her sack-like clothes and one of her supporting players, a 65-foot high dinosaur. Wendy Barrie "I'htt yhjt if cV 1 SUNDAY 9 P.M. Following a performance of Joseph Haydn's "Symphony in No. 88," the orchestra will present Glinka's "Kamarin-skaya: Slavic Wedding Fantasia." In the presentation of George Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm" variations, the AS group will use the original orchestration for the work, requiring saxophones.

Resendez will be the soloist in the performance of the Gershwin composition. He will perform at a new nine-foot grand piano which will be used for the first time on the AS campus. The concert will close with Benjamin Britten's "Soirees Musicales," a suite comprised of tunes from the operas of Gioacchino Rossini. The clothes are baggy coveralls which become more and morn ragged as the film progresses. The dinosaur is a ty-rannosaurus rex and hardly type of associate expected of Beverly Hills people.

The film and Miss Smith's own situation amount to a riches to rags story. In private life she is married to Alfred Smith, a wealthy investor. She is considered one of this area's best-dressed women and one of the most gracious hostesses in the Los Angeles area. That's why she is wondering what her friends will think TEMPE (Special) Under the direction of Dr. Wendell Rider, associate professor of music, the 50-member Arizona State Symphony orchestra will present its first concert of the year at 8 p.m., tomorrow in the ballroom of the Memorial Union.

Dr. Rider, permanent conductor of the group, studied conducting under the late Serge Koussevitzky, for many years conductor of the famous Boston Symphony orchestra. Guest soloist with the orchestra will be Lawrence Resendez, 1217 E. Diamond, Phoenix. A senior at Arizona State, Resendez.

is a piano student of Mrs. Patricia Keating, assistant professor of music. Resendez, who was graduated from St. Mary's High School in Phoenix in 1950, is a member of the AS concert choir, the Sun Devil marching band and Mu Rho Alpha, national honorary music fraternity. The program will open with a performance of a rarely-played work, the "Overture to Donna Diana," by the Czech composer Reznicek.

The overture to the comic opera is a representative example of 19th century romanticism. The film is another in Universal International's highly successful chain of science-fiction thrillers and is full of the usual prehistoric monsters. It's called "Land Unknown" and takes Miss Smith through lots of jungle terrain during its story of a marooned scientific expedition.

"After all," she said, "acting Is my hobby as well as my career, and I'm simply getting a lot of wonderful experience. "The picture and my shredded costume may be a far cry from Beverly Hills and Christian Dior, but to me it's just as much fun." 10 Dean Jones Sells Self To Studio HOLLYWOOD (AP) Dean Jones, young Metro bobby sox idol, believes the best training for movie stardom is a good course in salesmanship. "It's more important than a diploma from the Actors Studio," he argues. Dean, under contract for more than a year to the big studio and its subsidiary, MGM Records, says that a contract player who waits for the front office to hand him parts is well on the road to becoming a has-been before he even gets started. So far, the handsome singer has landed parts in "These Wilder Years," "Tea and Sympathy" and "The Great American Pastime," each one bigger than the last, strictly on his own salesmanship. Now he's after the plum role of his career that of Yeoman Garrett in the hilarious navy novel, "Don't Go Near the Water." Dean, a navy veteran, hired a top photographer 1 and two models and shot key scenes from the book with him as Yeoman Garrett.

Glenn Ford already has been cast in the top role of upcoming movie so, via super-imposed photography, he got Ford's head on the male model. The whole presentation' was done up in a sales brochure that would have pleased any Madison Avenue executive. Copies went to top executives including studio boss Dore Schary.
