Against the rest of the Western Athletic Conference, the Wildcats have been staunch in banning freshmen from varsity teams. Now they credit the "go-it-alone" attitude for partial success in landing a pair of mid-1970 football games with UCLA. The contract came at a time when California schools are poutish against WAC members and laxity concerning varsity use of first-year men. New Mexico trounced USC in track. Brigham Young clobbered California.

Both are larded liberally with freshman phenoms. And West Coast press and administrators indicated that if this were a sample of the WAC-forget it! The use of freshmen is a nebulous risk at best. It's easier to recruit an athlete than it is to keep him eligible. He may be able to make a mark in the record book but that doesn't necessarily qualify him as a student. Athletics must remain within the educational framework of an institution and if that standard is not mantained, the school might as well toss ethics aside and field a professional unit.

The WAC sunn will adopt a freshman rule. Hut until the mandate is conference-wide, the WAC risks being labeled a "rinky-dink" league. The tag is unfair. WAC standards make it outstanding in most important areas. tint repair work is needed at the very foundation of athletic ethics to eliminate wide-open situations that now exist.

Freshmen needn't suffer for lack of action. Most schools hap limited schedules for their frosh. And, if there is need for more competition, let the WAC do on an overall basis what some members now practice in track. put a non-school jersey on the frcshies, start them the outside lanes and let them run for experience, but not for points.
