On The Record The Salina Journal Wednesday, July 21, 1982 Page 15 GNP figures ignite a rally Fbr information NEW YORK (UPI) With megabuck institutions swarming, stocks were surging in heavy trading early Wednesday afternoon amid encouraging signs on the economic and interest-rate fronts. Blue-chips, such as IBM, were pacesetters in the summer rally, along with banking issues that fared well despite mixed earnings reports. The Dow Jones industrial average, which climbed 7.33 points Tuesday to its highest level since late May, was ahead 6.28 points to 639.71 around noon CDT. As of 1:20 p.m. Wednesday the Dow stood at 838.85, up 5.42.

The price of an average New York Stock Exchange share was up 18 cents. Advances led declines 894-410 among the 1,754 issues crossing the New York 1 Stock Exchange tape. The three-hour NYSE turnover amounted to about 42,090,000 shares compared with 32,910,000 traded during the corresponding period Tuesday. -o Wall Street apparently was encour- aged by the government's preliminary report showing the second-quarter gross national product rose 1.7 percent following a revised 5.1-percent slide in the first period. Commerce Secretary Malcolm Bal' drige said the report showed the economy was in a "transition" stage from '-recession to recovery.

Murray Weidenbaum, Council of Economic Advisers claimed the recession has bottomed and the economy has begun recover. Some investors were concerned about an apparent June slump, however, that showed housing starts, industrial production and factory operating rates all down. The GNP reports also said prices rose at a 5.3-percent annual rate in the second period following a revised 4.3- percent rate in the first period. Both of those figures were below the 8.8-percent rate in 1981's fourth quarter. Investors were encouraged the Federal Reserve has eased credit now that the nation's money supply growth has abated.

And the banking industry has lowered its prime lending rate a half point to 16 percent. On the trading floor, IBM, which has paced the market since reporting higher-than-expected earnings, was the most active NYSE-listed issue, up 1 Vs to 68 with block trades of 137,300 shares and 100,000 shares, both at 67 CHICAGO LIVE BEEF CATTLE SUPPLIED BY ANSPACHER ASSOC. Wheat was up 3 to 2 cents; corn off 1 to up 1 oats up 3 to and soybeans up 5 to 4 cents.

The market firmed primarily on the basis of higher gold values and a weaker dollar, floor sources said. Gold advanced and the dollar was weaker on sharply lower interest rates. That optimism was voiced upon the release of the remaining Polish internees who were arrested last December. Wheat also strengthened on reports of problems with the wheat crop in Poland and Brazil.
