FRIDAY JULY 24, 1964 THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL PAGE SEVEN Detroit Police Still Seeking Brutal Slayer of Teen-Agers DETROIT (UPI) The playground is quiet now. The bloodstains have been removed. Most of the fear is gone. But at night, women returning from shopping or some other errand will cast a nervous glance at the spot where the two bodies were found and their pace will quicken, anxious to return to the safety of their homes. And at the 16th precinct station, the patient methodical search for a vicious killer continues.

As a prelude to what was to have been a fine and glorious Fourth of July. Francis P. Brown and his life-long friend, Sheldon Miller bought some fire crackers the day before. Concealing their eagerness, they waited until nightfall to go to the playground and set off the firecrackers. They were dead a short time later They died in a hail of bullets in what was termed an "execution-like" slaying about 10:15 p.m Friday night.

July 3. Residents later otld police they didn't realize shots were being fired from a gun because firecrackers had been shot off continuously in the neighborhood the whole weekend. The brutal slaying rocked the pleasant tree-lined residential area on the city's west side bounded by West Seven Mile and Evergreen. The murder weapon, believed to be a nine-shot 22 caliber, was never found Teams of homicide detectives swarmed over the area collecting meager clues and questioning hundreds of suspects, but the killer, or killers, is still free. A top Detroit psychiatrist agreed with one of the police officials that crime statistics indicate the two boys were slain by another boy or boys.

Sheldon, 14, and Francis, 17, were buried by their grieving families. Hundreds of suspects have been questioned, but concrete clues have been at a minimum. Immediately following the slaying, the neighborhood was innundated by hordes of the morbidly curious who wanted to see where the bodies were found and to look at the bloodstains. And Sheldon's father, Abe Miller, reported to police that he received a phone call the night following the slaying. A male voice laughed and said: "I got your boy and you're next." Police termed the call the work of a crank.

Brown's family also reported receiving mysterious telephone calls. When the receiver was picked up, there would only be a dial tone. There were 40 calls in one hour and the family was forced to have the number changed. That was before the tragic shooting. Police theorized there may be a connection between those calls and the murders, but so far this has failed to prove out.
