,1 Sunday. Jan. 31,1971 3 Elr Anmeton lar Now 50 percent completed 18hole becorriink reality course By RICK RAFAEL by as "one of the finest, if not the finest, in the Army." The 'par 72 course will -require accurate tee shots on the shorter boles and well-placed approach shots on the longer boles due to the undulating fairways. Coupled with the lakes and streams that line the fairways and greens, the many sand traps that will add contrast to the course, and a great number of trees, playing will require a great amount of determination and accuracy for a respectable round. The new course will stretch far past its present boundaries, back behind WAC Center Headquarters and clear across the post main along Remount Creek to the old ATT Headquarters.

Although the course is 7,025 yards long, it will require about 8,200 yards of walking or about five miles. Twelve new holes have been added to the present nine hole facility. Designer Cobb, has taken advantage of a few of the present holes which will remain with the new course but with a certain amount of renovation. Cobb commented on his work saying, "It was a great pleasure designing this course. The natural roll in the terrain, the vegetation and situation of the already existing nine holes made this job one of the most enjoyable and interesting I have ever done.

With this fine new course added to Ft. McCkllan's battery of sports activities, not only military golfers, but sportsmen, are promised an exciting future in sports at the installation. IT" Uu Star Spom Writer to i the last part of 1970, Ft McClellan received a new theater; a new post library and a new public address system among many other new additions and renovations. But; in the heart of Colonel George G. Hines, deputy post one new addition and renovation at Ft McClellan stands out About 50 per cent completed the once-dreamed-of lWwle golf course is gradually becoming a reality for one of the post's most avid golf players.

1 the untiring efforts of Col. Hines, which have been instrumental in bringing this championship facility to McClellan, the new course undoubtedly will rank among the top in the Army and this area. Designer, George W. Cobb, who has gained renown throughout the golfing world for designing seven of the nine courses -at Hilton Head, S. was retained to design the local Cobb, after considerable attention and special planning, has taken tremendous advantage of the natural terrain at the fort He also has taken special precautions, along with his associates and Col.

Hines, in picking out trees which would remain intact with the construction of the course. Trees at Ft McClellan are of a great variety, and Cobb noted that not only will this course be one of the most challenging he has designed but also one of the most beautiful. The old course, a nine-hole facility, was 6,192 yards long with a front nine of 3,132 yards and a back nine of 3,060 yards. When the new course is completed, the rolling fairways and greens will stretch 7,025 yards and incorporate multi-tee settings at each hole along with an abundance of lakes and. streams.
