"Iowa State's running game was the best we have faced this season," said Killpack. Harold Brown rushed for two touchdowns and fellow running backs Tommy Davis and Jason Jacobs each added scores Saturday to fuel Iowa State. "I was happy with my performance," Hundley said. "I got a little tired because we had a few backs go out with injuries.

We had fewer backs with. But as far as what I did for the team, I'd have to say this was probably my best game." If Best and Hundley continue to perform the way they did Saturday, the Wildcats may be enjoying several more joyous lockerroom scenes in the coming weeks. St. nips NU in late going UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (UPI) For a guy who made the first two receptions of his college career Saturday against Nebraska, Kirk Bowman didn't do too badly.

Penn State's reserve tight end, whose first reception accounted for a touchdown earlier, came up with his second on a diving catch of a Todd Blackledge pass in the end zone with four seconds remaining to give the fifth-ranked Nittany Lions a dramatic 27-24 upset of No. 2 Nebraska. The win put Penn State at 4-0 while Nebraska dropped to 2-1. Penn State coach Joe Paterno hadn't given the 6-foot-l, 246-pound sophomore much of a chance to catch a ball before Saturday. Bowman was recruited as a linebacker and was made a defensive tackle and a guard before Paterno allowed him to return to his old high school position tight end.

"We recruited him as a linebacker, but he got so big we made him a defensive tackle," Paterno said. "Then we needed offensive linemen and he runs so well, we felt he'd make a good guard, but he hurt his knee. Then we needed defensive linemen and shifted a tight end over, so we told him to go back to his old position." A personal foul penalty against the Buskers on the kickoff enabled Penn State to start from its 35. Blackledge completed five passes on the drive, eluding an 11-yard throw to Kenny Jackson on a fourth-and-11 that moved the ball to the Nebraska 23 with 28 seconds left.

Two plays later, Blackledge connected with tight end Mike McCloskey, who caught the ball while falling out of bounds at the 2. Blackledge then lofted a pass over linebacker Mike Knox to Bowman, who made a diving catch in the back of the end zone as a record Beaver Stadium crowd of 85,304 went wild. The last-ditch drive capped an entertaining game that saw the teams combine to pile up 977 yards in total offense. Blackledge completed 23 of 39 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns, tying a Penn State record for most touchdown passes in season (15). Gill, who had thrown only 29 passes in Nebraska's first two games, was 16 of 34 for 239 yards and two touchdowns.

"It was a great football game," Paterno said. "It was a shame for either team to lose it. Naturally, I'm delighted our kids made that fantastic drive at the end. It was the kind of game I thought it would be. There was enough glory in it for both teams." Nebraska coach Tom Osborne agreed.

"Obviously, it was a great game from a spectator's point of view," he said. "We played pretty well. We Just couldn't stop their receivers and their quarterback. They had great protection, The coverage wasn't that bad." Osborne also took exception with people who had called the Cornhuskers the dominant team in college football this year, using as evidence the fact they had scored 110 points in two games and set an NCAA record last week with 883 yards total offense. "We are good, but we're not the best ever," he said.

"That's ridiculous to say that. That was-the fans and not us. No one was overconfident today." A 14-yard touchdown pass from Blackledge to Bowman and Curt Warner's two-yard run gave Penn State a 140 lead midway through the second quarter. Nebraska scored its first touchdown after Lion freshman Massimo Manca missed his third field goal attempt of the half, capping an 80-yard drive with a 30-yard TD pass from Gill to Irving Fryar. Blackledge hit Jackson with an 18- yard scoring strike in the third quarter to restore Penn State's two-touchdown lead, but the Cornhuskers rallied on a two-yard pass from Gill to tailback Mike Rozier and Kevin Seibel's 37-yard field goal that made it 21-17 with 13:02 remaining.

Nebraska drove to the go-ahead touchdown after free safety Neil Harris intercepted Blackledge's pass in the end zone with 6:52 left to play. Gill hit four passes for 55 yards in the 80-yard drive and Rozier had a 12-yard gain that moved the ball to the Penn State 3. Gill scored three plays later. (UPI) Quarterback Sean Salisbury said Southern Cal had a razzle-dazzle play all set up to use whenever they got a turnover, and the play worked well Saturday producing a 67-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Timmy White to split end Jeff Simmons.

"We worked on that pass in practice a let," Salisbury said following the Trojans 12-0 victory against Oklahoma. "We decided if we ever got a turnover, we would hit them with that play. It worked just like we practiced it. Everybody executed it perfectly." The play was sent in when linebacker Keith Browner intercepted a Kelly Phelps pass and returned it to the USC 33 yard line. White then threw deep to Simmons, who completed the 67-yard scoring play with less than seven minutes left in the first half. Southern Cal had opened the sewing nine minutes into the first quarter on a one-yard pass from Salisbury to fullback John Kamana. The extra point kick attempt and the two-point pass try after the second touchdown both failed. "So many things can go wrong with NFL talks to resume NEW YORK (UPI) While fans suffer through the first Sunday without NFL games in the league's 63-year history, negotiators for the striking players will be meeting with the Management Council at an undisclosed location to resume the talks that broke off eight days ago. It had seemed the meeting would be held in Washington when Jack Donlan, the NFL Management Council's chief negotiator, agreed to appear Sunday along with Gene Upshaw, the president of the NFL Players Association, on the CBS program "Face the Nation" at 11:30 a.m.

in the nation's capital. But hours later Donlan backed out of the debate, leading observers to believe that New York once again would host the discussions between Donlan and Ed Garvey, executive director of the NFLPA. "All I can say is that we're meeting sometime this weekend at an undisclosed location," said Council spokesman Curt Mosher. "It's going to be a regular negotiating session sporadic but outgoing." Another Council spokesman said he was not at liberty to discuss what may take place, "but I will tell you that it was Mr. Garvey who initiated the contact for resumption of bargaining sessions.

I don't know if he will meet with Mr. Donlan alone or have his player representatives with him. I just assume he would not bargain without some players present." Meanwhile, in Washington, the NFLPA accused the three major television networks of funding the pro football strike and threatened the networks with picketing and legal action. The networks are paying the league $30 million for the first two weeks of the strike through a contract provision. Garvey said he did not expect "any real progress" in the Sunday talks because of the payments by the networks.

He said he has written to Grant Tinker, chairman of the board of NBC, William Paley, chairman of the board of CBS, and Leonard Goldmonson, chairman of the board of ABC, about the matter. Northwestern snaps string EVANSTON, HI. (UPI) Saturday was for believers in Cinderella and Santa Glaus. Northwestern snapped an NCAA record three-year, 34-game losing streak with a 31-6 victory over Northern Illinois. Since the Wildcats defeated Wyoming 27-22 in the second game of the 1979 season, Northwestern athletes and faithful have suffered through a dismal winless streak that lasted 1,106 days and 136 quarters.

The streak is dead. The Wildcats were to live happily ever after at least until next Saturday's contest with Big Ten rival Iowa. "I've never been told that we weren't a good football team," said Northwestern coach Dennis Green, hired a year ago to reverse the tide of the Wildcats' fumbling fortunes. "We Just needed something like this. Northern Illinois is a good football team." Perfect Balance The matched Total Home Comfort System.

"The snap may be off, and you have to handoff twice three exchanges right there before I get it. Everybody made a sure handoff and I was in the open. My main thought was to be sure I caught the ball." The 12 points Southern Cal scored in the first half extended to 169 its consecutive game scoring streak, best in the nation, and the shutout ended Oklahoma's streak at 181 games. Trojan coach John Robinson said his defense "is to be congratulated in the extreme." Southern Cal held the usually awesome Oklahoma ground attack to just 43 yards, while allowing the Sooners to complete 8-of-23 passes for 168 yards. Southern Cal totaled 201 rushing yards and 153 aerial yards on 12 of 16 Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer said the shutout was "incidental." "We knew it would happen some time. It's the kind of thing you want to happen against good teams," Switzer said.

"The last team that shut us out was Notre Dame, and now USC." "All losses hurt, but it hurts more when you lose to teams that are not so good," Switzer said. (UPI) Ught-hit- ting Fred Stanley drove in three runs with two singles and Dwayne Murphy added three RBI on a two-run double and sacrifice fly Saturday to help the Oakland A's hand the Kansas City Royals a costly 10-3 defeat. The loss, combined with California's 6-5 victory over Texas Saturday night, leaves the Royals 3V4 games behind the Angels in the AL West. The A's assembled a pair of five-run rallies to chase starter Dennis Leonard, 104, who left after pitching to three batters in the fifth.

Tom Underwood, who relieved Oakland starter Brian Kingman after he was ejected in the third inning, improved to 10-5. Kansas City took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Willie Wilson singled, stole second, went to third when catcher Bob Kearney's throw was wild and scored on George Brett's infield out. Jerry Martin blasted a two-out solo home run off Kingman to make it 2-0. The A's answered with five runs in the second. Stanley had an RBI single, Rickey Henderson doubled home a run and Murphy added a two-run double.

Jeff Burroughs closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Kansas City scored a run to make it 5-3 in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by U.L. Washington.
