FAGE TWO THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL MONDAY, JUNE 15, 1964 Eight Die In Water Mishaps By United Press International At least eight persons died in water accidents in Michigan over the weekend, including a suburban Detroit police sergeant who drowned in Half Moon Lake while attempting to rescue his daughter. Sgt. Robert A. Fowler, 41, Inkster, dived from a boat to rescue his daughter, Barbara, 12, who had waded into the lake on the Washtenaw-Livingston County line near Ann Arbor Saturday and apparently stepped in a hole. Both Fowler and the girl went down before the horrified eyes of other members of the family and picknickers in the area.

Their bodies were recovered by skindivers. Two Detroit half brothers drowned Saturday in the Detroit River while playing fisherman. They were Rickey Parker, 8, and Herbert Becker 6. They went to the river with a schoolmate, Jackie Sweeney, 8. who told police that Herbert fell in the river and Rickey jumped in and tried to save him.

Neither boy could swim. Other victims included: --Lydia Gregulak, 6, Flint, drowned in Byron Lake, Fenton Township Sunday in about five feet of water, 30 feet from shore. Her body was recovered by Genesse County deputies. --Glen Rickman, 14, Berkley, drowned Saturday in Walnut Lake in West Bloomfield Township. Oakland County deputies said he dived off a raft into 25 feet of water and failed to surface.

His body was recovered about 20 minutes after he went under. --Donald Kurzawa, 15, Warren, drowned Saturday in the middle of the channel of St. Clair Flats. Authorities said he was attempting to swim the 50 foot channel when he went under. --Linda Singleton, 6, Grand Rapids, drowned Saturday in the Muskegon River near Morley while playing with a plastic boat.

I'm glad you liked the book, although I'm a bit mystified about your emphasis on straight (non-convertible) pre- ferreds. You were the young man I had in mind when I stressed the argument that a person in his capital building years should put most of his money into common stocks in the hopes of increasing his funds.

Your preferreds are fine -in fact, your entire list of securities shows excellent judgment but the preferreds remain a sort of fixed investment and you are not likely to get much price appreciation out of a stock paying a fixed $4.50 a year in dividends unless money rates once more fall to around per cent, and that isn't likely, at least not right away. However, I repeat, quality is fine, hold the preferreds now that you have them, but concentrate future buying on growth type commons, of which i'ou already have a fine list. If you're this well along on your program at 38, it looks to me as though you're going to have a comfortable retirement. Q. Late in 1960 I bought Liggett Myers Tobacco.

It has since gone down. I am a widow, living entirely on my dividends. What stock would you advise to take its place? A. L. as have the other tobacco shares, has suffered from the health stories in recent years.

Many analysts who follow the field now feel that the worst of the industry's troubles are behind it. You can get arguments either way, but it seems to me that from an income point of view you can't do better elsewhere. At around 75, the stock is yielding better than 6Vk per cent. I don't know where you could go with the money for that return. Q.

Curtis Publishing became active on the nearby ore discovery and moved from 7 to 19. I sold short in the 12 to 14 range, figuring it would not go far on such news. Recently the stock faltered somewhat, but 1 feel I have a tiger by the tail. I think it belongs where it started --at 7 or 8. What is your opinion? A.

During a recent week, a lot of people put nearly $3 mil- ion into i Publishing stock. The stock closed at The ore discovery may prove to be a real bonanza, or an empty egg, or something in between. I haven't any facts which would justify predicting where the stock will go. By the time you read this you may be "home free" with a handsome profit, or nursing a DR. Light and Power and put the money in savings at per cent. A. From an income point new, this would be the righl move. Conn. Light yields about per cent on present market, so you would be gaining a full percentage point.

Incidentally why hold bonds if you want to build up current income. Either convert to Hs or cash them in and reinvest the money in some other current curity. income producing se- Q. I am retired, but would like to put $5,000 into speculation. What stocks would you suggest? A.

It's quite possible you have so much money that even in retirement you can afford to iose $5,000. If so you're going to have to risk it on your own I can't advise on speculation --and especially in retirement. Begin Safety Check Plan LANSING (UPD--About 7,000 Michigan service stations have begun a campaign to check 1.5 million vehicles for safety, the Michigan oil industry announced today.

The free safety check program is being inaugurated at the request of Gov. George Romney, who said earlier this year such initiative by the petroleum industry could help cut Michigan's traffic death toll. "Two minutes could save a lifetime if that two minutes revealed that a car's brakes were below minimum efficiency or that a tire was about to blow out," Romney said. The oil industry said its program will follow the two-minute theme and that participating stations will display poster advertising the safety check service. William Palmer, executive director of the group, said the car checks will include lights, windshield wipers, brakes, glass condition, steering, mirrors and tires.

Palmer said the check can be tnade in the time it takes to fill a motorist's gas tank, so no time delay or inconvenience is involved. Heads Hospital Group BENTON HARBOR (UPI)-C.
