By KENT SMITH Editor DENTON An hour with David Goerlitz is fast paced and fun for children, and his way to reach elementary to high school students. The former Winston Man was the guest speaker Friday for two Lockerman Middle School assemblies and a Health and Public Services Building presentation that night. The student-run SHOUT program sponsored Goerlitz as part of World No Tobacco Day. More than two decades ago, he was most-photographed person on cigarette advertisements, but for more than a dozen years, Goerlitz has toured the world to tell children that the image of smoking does not reflect the reality of starting the habit. He involved the children, teachers and Principal Dale Brown who were at the assembly and made examples of himself and his children when they were elementary and middle- school students.

The problem is worse than most surveys tell us.

Teen smoking in surveys averages around 23 percent, but Goerlitz said the number is closer to 40 percent from his own surveys he has done while talking with more than 6 million students. Tobacco companies rely on marketing, said Goerlitz, who was in 42 Winston ads. Cigarettes for the most part are all the same with 4,760 different chemicals including carbon monoxide, tar and arsenic, with one-third of those shared by anyone who breathes the secondhand smoke. make a product that kills 400,000 people a year look Goerlitz said about the tobacco goals. The warnings even wake up people to the dangers.

He said similar warnings on everyday items like shampoo, milk or toilet paper would make people not buy the product, but not the case with cigarettes. takes it he said. make you States had the perfect chance to cut teen and adult smoking with the $206 billion-dollar tobacco settlement, but only 3 per- cent of the money has gone to health departments, while the remainder has gone to lawyers, roads and other items not related to health issues. Sixty percent of settlement has gone to saving seals. throwing our kids he said.

Society has not changed its ways to combat smoking and too many adults are blaming teens for starting smoking when they are enticed into the habit by peer pressure and marketing. Part of the blame goes to laws that make littering a 40 times larger fine than selling cigarettes to a minor. A frequent airline traveler, he understands the need for additional safety measures after Sept. 11, but wants a proportional response to deal with cigarette use. In more than a dozen years, the message pretty much is the same.

Make the message fun and interesting for children while throwing in knowledge that will help those on the fence of whether to start not take that first puff.
