PAGE SIX THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1964 Staebler Has Clear Field For Support LANSING (UPI) a Democratic Chairman Zolton A Ferency predicted today Congressman-at-large Neil Staebler will find near unanimous support for his gubernatorial ambitions this weekend at the party's spring convention. Ferency said it was even possible that, contrary to traditional party policy, the convention might endorse Staebler for the Democratic nomination for governor. The party chairman indicated he would not be adverse to such action when he said, "as an individual I think Staebler would make an outstanding governor and he'd be a beautiful contrast to Gqv George Romney. He epitomizes all the things Romney is not." Ferency said he could not officially back Staebler yet because party policy requires state central officials to maintain a hands off policy until nominations are decided. Staebler, the 58-year-old Ann Arbor businessman and politician who was elected to his first congressional term in 1962, is the only announced cratic candidate for governor.

Board Okays Bridge Work ALLEGAN--A motion to earmark $50,000 of the $75.000 tentatively budgeted for the county road commission in 1965 for tile purpose of re-building the William i in Trowbridge township, was approved by a 17-11 vote in the Allegan county board of supervisors session late Tuesday The proposal was offered by Trowbridge township Supervisor Grover i on the heels of a roads and bridges committee report which recommended placing "on file" two requests for reconstruction of the bridge. Board Chairman Fritz Jager said he would ask Prosecutor Ervin Andrews for a ruling on the 17 11 vote to determine whether a motion of this type could be passed by a simple majority or required a two- thirds vote of the entire board. The resolution was not voted on until late in the session when only 28 of the board's 38 members were present. The bridge in question has been a center of controversy ever since it collapsed 16 years ago under the weight of a brine tanker under contract to the County Road i i Township residents contend that parts of the old bridge were used to repair a span elsewhere in the county and that insurance settlements from the mishap also were used for other purposes by the road commission.

The bridge never was replaced and when the township raised $23,500 as a contribution toward reconstruction of the span, the commission took no action on the project because state and federal funds would not be available Gngsby said the $50,000 voted by the board, plus the $23.500 available from the township, would be adequate to replace the bridge.
