By KONRAD SUROWIEC Staff Writer CENTREVILLE Two police officers who were the first on the scene of a tragic auto accident in late December were recognized March 12 for their heroic efforts in helping the injured. The Queen County Commissioners awarded certificates of appreciation to Dfc.Matt Kempel of the Queen County Office and Greg officer with the Dover (Del.) Police Department. Also attending the March 12 commissioners meeting were Scott Haas and Steve Johnson, paramedics with the Queen County Emergency Med- ical division of the Department of Emergency Services. A woman and her 13-month-old infant daughter were killed on Dec.29,2001 when a car collided with a pickup truck on Maryland Route 302 near Barclay.The car was occupied by four family members two infant girls and their mother and father and a family friend.Two men were in the pickup.A 5-month-old girl and the four men survived the crash. Four of the injured were flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and one was taken by ambulance to Kent Queen Haas said the two first respon- ders Kempel and Hopkins a tremendous were complimented by EMS personnel for their actions.Johnson said the EMS division sincerely thanked the two men for their help.

Two state police helicopters, Queen County EMS and Sudlersville and Church Hill volunteer fire companies all responded to the crash. Johnson said Kempel was the first one on the scene.Hopkins, who was off-duty at the a short time later.Both men performed resuscitation until additional resources arrived and stayed at the scene for the duration of the call.
