STOLEN ELECTIONS Yesterday, at Bloomington, the Republican candidate for attorney general made the flat and direct charge that the 1939 mayoralty election in Chicago was "stolen" from Dwight Hi Green and that the 1938 senatorial election was "stolen" from Richard' Lyons. Half of that charge seems to be substantiated by the recount under the direction of the courts. results of this recount show such consistent errors that they could not possibly be accidental. 'Yesterday, for example, the recount of-the vote in the third' precinct' of the Twenty-seventh ward showed that Kelley was credited with 71 more votes than he received while Green was given 72 votes less than he received, a net gain for Green of 143. Sc far 55 precincts have been recounted.

They show 2,606 votes stolen from Green, with errors.in every precinct It is claimed that on this basis that an honest count would have shown Green 115,000 votes. Those figures should be enough to make every decent citizen of Illinois, regardless of party, fighting mad. If we can't -have 'honest- elections we might just as well not have representative'government at. all. Stealing an election isn't just smart it's a mean and contemptible crime against-al the decent people of the state and when it is clone deliberately no punishment can be too severe, A SCHOOL FOR EMPLOYERS Employers would do well to take advantage of.

the school being conducted weekly by the retail merchants, for study 01 unemployment compensation. Even employers of one or two persons are affected by the Jaw and few of them know much, about it. It is one of the most burdensome of all taxes, being a i-ect tax on payrolls, but the law is on the books, and those who have to. pay the tax should know the facts There are many penalties to be assessed for violation and many benefits to be derived from a knowledge of the law For that reason, employers should' take time- to attend these weekly sessions. Ignorance of the law might prove very costi THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 1940 n-nrl HnknM itjQU.

J.llCrC This Kenosha shoemaker who tangled with census enumerators, scored a 100 percent victory and got away with; thousands ol dollars 'worth of free advertising. The case against him is to be dismissed, so we won't have to send along a of bucks toward his defense-fund, which we planning to do. We've been getting madder and madder at these census questions. At.first they didn't seem important, but the principle back of them gets more important every day. We are perfectly willing, for example, to tell people our age and whether or not we are but we don't like the kind of government that says we must tell or go to jail.

After all, the government is supposed to be tlie servant of the people in America, and not the master. We hire these little tin gods in Washington to work Tor us and pay them, and as soon as they get a job they begin bossing us and pushing us around. They should come to us, hat in hand, and say, "yes sir" and "no sir" instead of telling us what to do and what not to do. Here is the way we would like to answer some ot the census questions. "Give the street, avenue or road on which you live, and the number." "Surely.

The government is entitled to know that." "Name of each person in the "Certainly, glad to give them." government or anybody else.
