Clyde's single wing too much for Mustangs 19. The By GARY ISAACSON GROVE Ed Buller has been coaching football at Clyde High School for 36 years and, when he started, the single wing offense was all the rage. Buller has drilled his players in the intricacies of that formation for decades and Tuesday night, the 1978 model Blue Jays proved that if something is done well, it never goes out of style, Top-ranked Clyde, with halfbacks Monty Bechard and Aaron Begnoche spinning and slashing behind a coordinated offensive line, rolled up 397 yards on the ground and ran past previously undefeated and sixth-ranked Sylvan Unified, 31-7, in a Class 1A District playoff game. The win improved Clyde's record to 9-1 and put them in a Regional playoff Saturday. The Mustangs, champions of the Quivira League, finished a fine year at 9-1.

It was Bechard who did most of the damage for the Blue Jays. The 5-10, 145-pound sophomore scampered for 224 yards on 21 carries, scored two touchdowns and kicked a field goal. On defense, he Intercepted two passes and broke up three others. Begnoche, a 5-6, 130-pound senior, carried 18 times for 105 yards and triggered the Blue Jays' awesome attack. The Clyde line, led by guard John Geisler, made it all possible, however.

The Blue Jay blockers cleared the outside lanes for Bechard and Begnoche and broke the middle open for Mark. Gallagher and Craig Lange. "Their line just dominated us," Sylvan coach Mike Weatherman said. "We were trying to come up and meet 'em, but they just had too many people." Mustangs controlled the tempo in the early going, though. They stopped Clyde on three plays to open the game and then unveiled their wishbone.

Sylvan took over at its own 30, and drove on the ground to the Blue Jay 29-yard line with quarterback John Naegele and halfback Richard Frederking doing some fancy ball-handling on the option. Hoxie rally nips Osborne HOXIE Quarterback Steve Dietz led a stirring second-half comeback by Hoxie, throwing for three touchdown passes in the final two periods to lead the Indians past Osborne, 19-15, here Tuesday night in a Class 3A District playoff game. Dietz, a 150-pound junior, completed 8 of 13 passes for 206 yards as the ninthrated Indians won their ninth game of the season against one loss. Osborne ended its season with a 7-3 record. The Bulldogs from the Mid-Continent League jumped out in front quickly as Richard Winder scored on a five-yard run in the first quarter.

Jeff Karlin kicked the extra point to give Osborne a 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 15-0 in the second period when Winder scored on a one-yard plunge and then tallied a two-point conversion. That's when Dietz went to work. The Hoxie quarterback hit Dru Hughes with a 48-yard scoring strike in the third quarter to cut the lead to 15-6 and then found Dick Heskett on an 11- yard TD in the final quarter to make it a 15-12 contest. The winning score came when Dietz hooked up with Hughes for a 63-yard yard scoring play.

Hoxie gained 352 yards of total offense while Osborne totaled 248. (UPI) Kansas State players Tuesday drilled in preparation for Saturday's game against Colorado but were hampered by injuries. "We're still trying to get our crippled people well," said coach Jim Dickey. Eugene Goodlow, Mack Green, Monte Bennett, Tom Faerber and James Walker still were not at full strength.

With the exception of Faerber's broken nose, the other other four starters had nagging ankle injuries. Colorado will resemble some of the other teams Kansas State has faced this season, the Wildcats' coach said. "They're in the same category as Iowa State and Missouri," Dickey said. "They're a big, physical team." Dodgers' Forster has arm surgery INGLEWOOD, Calif. (UPI) Los Angeles Dodgers' reliever Terry Forster, who posted 22 saves for the National League champions last season, underwent surgery on his left elbow at Centinela Valley Hospital Tuesday.

From there, Naegele pitched to halfback Allen Walter, who tossed a 29- yard strike to split end Barry Vanada in the end zone. Jeff Jackson's kick made it 7-0 with 6:20 left in the period. Clyde roared right back after the kickoff, moving 64 yards on just four plays. Bechard gained 54, including: a 35-yard romp on a counter play to the left for the score. The two-point conversion try failed.

4 Big mistakes The teams took turns stopping each other at their respective doorsteps before the Mustangs made two mistakes which probably cost them the game. After they stopped Clyde at their own 15, Lange sacked Naegle for a nineyard loss on third down, the Jays partially blocked a punt and took over at the 27. Bechard swept right end for 20 yards before Gallagher busted up the middle for seven yards and the score. The 165-pound senior broke through for the two-point conversion and Clyde led, 14-7, with 6:28 left in the half. On the first play after the kickoff, Lange popped up again, recovering a fumbled pitch from Naegele to Walter at the Sylvan 36.

"Lange was just unbelieveable on defense," Buller praised his big senior end. From there, the Jays took six plays to score. Bechard used the counter play again, this time to the right, for the touchdown from 18 yards out and Gallagher barely got in for the two-point conversion to make it 22-7 at halftime. "That second quarter cost us," said Weatherman, who lost Frederking to a knee injury in the period. "It just seemed like the kids let down." The Mustangs got back up for the second half, however, and moved the ball well on their first possession.

Naegele, who had 100 yards rushing on 15 carries, led them inside Clyde territory but Lange threw Walter for a five-yard loss and Walter lost 10 more when 1 he fumbled a handoff. Max Pounds recovered a Begnoche fumble to stop the Blue Jays but Bechard turned it around again on the ensuing drive with his second interception. He picked off a Nagele pass at the Clyde: 24 and returned it to the 36. It took Buller's club nine plays to get the clincher. Bechard picked up 48 yards on the drive and Gallagher plunged in from the one for the TD with 1:33 left in the period.

Neither team got very close after that. Sylvan gained through the middle with fullback Brad Nitsch (11 carries 59 The power sweep Clyde's Monty. The Jackrabbits will advance to Saturday's Regional game with a 9-1 record. Neither team was able to mount a sustained drive during the first two quarters before KSD took over the foot- ball on its own 35-yard line late in the first half.
