September 25, Sftlca Yesterday The following excerpts were taken from old newspapers recorded on microfilm at Kettleson Memorial Library: September, 1922 The Sitka Tribune reports: "George Rice, the plumber, accompanied by his helper, Mrs, Rice, who have been out fishing in their boat since June 15, returned home xthis week to become city residents Rice brought along some Sitka shrimp and a rock oyster and believes there are commercial possibilities in both. September, 1958 The Daily Sentinel reports: "A number of Sitkans left Sunday for Juneau where they joined a car and bus caravan leaving for Fairbanks to attend the annual state convention of the Loyal Order of Moose. Mr.

Mrs. Joe Appling, Mr. Mrs. Murray LaCour, Harry Pollen, Rev Murlin Day and Fred Van Horn. Delegates from all over Alaska are expected to attend." Miss Sitka Group to Meet The Miss Sitka Scholarship Pageant Committee meets 3-4 p.m.

Sunday at the home of Julie Hames, 307 Marine St. The pageant committee is a non-profit organization dedicated to the educational advancement of young women through scholarships. It is affiliated with the Miss America Pageant. Those interested in helping are welcome to attend. For more information, call 7-S454 or 7-8813.

Classes Open in Comm, School Program Several Community School classes still are open, and Sitkans may register by calling the school office, 7-8670, or by attending the next class meeting. Class lists have been mailed to boxholders. Children's calligraphy will be taught 45:15 p.m. Thursdays, and calligraphy for adults will be taught p.m. Thursdays Sept.

13-18. ANB delegates elected were Al Perkins, Fred Hope, and Vesta Dominies. ANS delegates elected were Florence Eddy, Irene Roberts and Roberta Draper. Also attending will be executive committeemen Frank 0. Williams Patrick Paul and Nelson Frank.

Grand Camp officers attending will be Fred Lewis, treasurer, and Joni Lewis, sergeant-at-arms. Ambulance At 12:08 p.m. Wednesday an ambulance took a patient from the airport to Mt. Edgecumbe hospital. At 2:25 p.m.

a patient was taken from a fishing boat at Halibut Producer's Co-op to Mt. Edgecumbe hospital. At 7:47 p.m. a patient was taken from 3312 Halibut Point Road to Sitka Community Hospital. At 8:29 p.m.

a patient was taken from the American Legion Hall to Sitka Community Hospital. Delegates will be instructed at next Monday night's meeting. Ray Paddock, Tlingit-Haida Central Council president, attended last Monday night's meeting, and reported on movements to keep Mt. Edgecumbe High School open. ANB will hold its annual teachers reception, with Jan Garcia setting up time and place.

The group also voted to send presidents to the Sealaska sponsored dinner in Junea Oct. 3 honoring elders instrumental in the early battle for land claims. ANB welfare committee reported that $1,300 was transferred to the ANB scholarship fund. Use of the hall was approved for the Cross Mountain Dancers on Sept. 25; an AA dinner Oct.

11; Cy Williams on Oct. 18; Alanna dinner on Oct. 30. Tickets for a 1" wide gold bracelet with ANB design are available for a $3 donation, the president said. Proceeds from the ticket go for scholarships and Grand Camp.

A fisherman in need of medica.1 attention and a skipper for his boat was provided with both Wednesday by Sitka Coast Guard. Crewmen aboard the 88 ft. shrimp boat "Mandingo" reported that their skipper had a possible heart attack around 10:45 a.m. A helicopter from Sitka Coast Guard Air Station, who had received the call, soon found the boat near St. Lazaria Island, about 10 miles east of Sitka.

When they attempted to take the patient from the boat, he told them the boat needed a skipper to navigate it back to Sitka. The helicopter returned to Sitka and picked up medical corpsman A.T. Miller and Coxswain Bill Palmer. Palmer is a crewman off the Coast Guard cutter "Woodrush." They then returned to the "Mandingo," and dropped off both Palmer and Miller. The "Mandingo," along with the two Coastguardsmen and patient, returned to S.itka by 2:25 p.m.
